Summary & Overview of the High School of Commerce Summer School
The High School of Commerce will host an intensive extended-year summer program using a vetted SEZP-wide instructional model, for rising 10th, 11th and 12th grade students in need of recovering course credits.
The High School of Commerce will maximize the summer school experience to:
Provide four weeks of foundational intervention in reading, language, and math
Address underlying causes for below-grade-level performance that have/will continue to impact course grades and MCAS outcomes
Combat regression trends and improve transitions to grade-level rigor in high school
Reimagine summer school as an "academic ladder" through a nurturing community of learners
Session Dates:
Session I - June 20 - July 3rd from 8:00- 1:45 (all days - 10 total) M-Fri
Session II - July 8 - July 23 from 8:00 - 1:45 (10 days no Friday's)
Summer School Teacher Overview
The High School of Comerce needs strong teachers to create an four-week long implementation of rigorous academic support. Throughout the four weeks, Summer School Teachers will be responsible for implementing a variety of approaches to increase student academic performance and diligently monitoring student progress in response to those approaches. This role requires teachers to attend professional development and integrate related content throughout the entire month of instruction. The focus of the PD will be: research-based intervention techniques, curriculum/content review and preparation, teacher collaboration, lesson plan work time, and creation of a positive learning environment for students. As a HSC Summer School Teacher, you are encouraged to try new evidence-based strategies to strengthen academic success.
Teaching Positions Available
Algebra 1 - (x1 per session)
Algebra 2 - (x1 per session)
Geometry - (x1 per session)
Math Applications - (x1 per session)
ELA (grades 9-12) - (up to 4)
Spanish 1 & 2 - (x1 per session)
PE - (x1 per session)
Credit Recovery - (x1 per session)
Science - (x1 per session)
Teacher Responsibilities
With support and general guidance from SEZP and individual schools, teachers are expected to:
Work with Students
Measure and monitor student progress throughout the weeks
Adjust instruction according to daily student data from informal/formal assessments
Teach a minimum of 6 hours per day throughout the summer school
Implement instructional approaches and methods of assessment covered in PD to drive results
Professional Development
Attend mandatory professional development provided by HSC and complete any related prep work
Support & regularly communicate with your Summer School Site Coordinator before and during weeks of programming
Implement strategies for building a positive, high-quality Summer School culture
Operations & Logistics
100% attendance and daily on-time arrival is expected throughout Summer School and during mandatory professional development
Create appropriate lesson plans for each Summer School day of instruction
Manage any and all other tasks necessary for operational excellence as outlined by the academy leaders
Teacher Requirements
Must be a problem solver who works to overcome challenges
Must possess a belief that all students can achieve at high levels
Must demonstrate an ability to create differentiated lesson plans based on student performance over time
Must have demonstrated techniques for building relationships with students and families
Must demonstrate that students have been successful in their classroom

Selection as a Summer School Teacher recognizes an individual for his/her outstanding instruction, leadership in the classroom, and commitment to urban education. The Summer School experience will also give teachers the opportunity to share with and learn from other great educators in a highly collaborative environment. In addition, teachers will receive:
A $30.00 hourly rate
High-quality professional development before Summer School begins. More details about the schedule will be released after teachers are selected
ScheduleTeachers will teach a minimum of 6 hours each day and are expected to provide support during transition times in accordance with systems outlined by the Summer School Site Coordinator.
