HCZ's - St. Nicholas and Lincoln Community Centers are an educational, non-profit, after-school programs for K - 8th Grade students in the Harlem community. Teaching Artists at the program, advocate for Arts Education as a means to cultivate the student holistically in an educational setting. We are currently seeking teachers to support our curriculum in the area of Theatre and Vocal Music Production to work with students living in under-performing school districts. All children and their families have access to the full array of support services within the HCZ community network.

The rigorous academic program and extensive support systems develop mind, body and character and prepare students to attend, excel in and graduate from college.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Prepare and develop class curriculum, lesson plans, activities and special projects
  • Coordinate subject related trips, guest speakers, special events, student exhibitions, and college trips.
  • Attend weekly staff meetings.
  • Work with Education team in creating arts & academics lessons.
  • Be committed and integrate Youth Development into teaching practice.
  • Engage youth in the following areas:
    • Critical Thinking
    • Evaluation
    • Risk-taking
    • Rehearsals
    • Hands-on Project-based Learning
    • Documentation of work
    • Community-building and activism
  • Illustrates basic musical concepts (e.g. time and rhythm) for students through activities such as playing recorded music or playing an instrument in class accompanied by students.
  • Designs creative activities to allow students to experience different musical styles, interpret musical scores and compose their own music.
  • Provide aural training through the performance of music, talks, discussion, practical music and written assignments.
  • Introduce individual students to particular instruments and assess students' needs in regard to instrumental training.
  • Lead and facilitate 2 hour classes in the Fall and Spring and 6 hour classes in the Summer.
  • Sets up and conducts school choirs and orchestras and concert bands.

Qualification, Skills and Knowledge Requirements
  • A commitment to teaching and providing continuity on a part time basis through the end of the school year.

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university, preferred.
  • Specific knowledge of music curriculum.
  • Proficiency in at least one instrument.
  • Enthusiasm for and ability in music and teaching.
  • Ability to communicate musical concepts and instructions clearly.
  • Experience working in youth development with high school youth and teaching well developed enrichment courses, social consciousness, self identity and efficacy.
  • Must be able to work independently as well as collaboratively with staff and students on projects and full curriculum.
  • A firm educational and/or practical background in Music.
  • Personal portfolio and examples of past and/or present work.
  • Knowledge in the following a must: Vocal Arrangement and Lyric-writing.
  • Knowledge in the following a plus: Protools, Propellorhead Reason, Garage Band, composition, and arrangement, musical notation.
