Job Summary
This position requires a valid Alaska certificate and is represented by the Anchorage Education Association (AEA) union. The number of work days is established and salary is based upon the AEA negotiated pay scale. Information on both can be found online at www.asdk12.org/contractadmin. Positions which are .50 to 1.0 FTE are in the Alaska Teachers' Retirement System (TRS), positions which are .40 to .49 FTE are in the Alaska Public Employees' Retirement System (PERS). Positions which are .39 FTE or less are not eligible for participation in either Alaska retirement system.
This position reports to and is evaluated by the site principal. Special Education teachers plan and provide learning experiences for students with disabilities, including cognitive, emotional, or physical disabilities, in a variety of educational settings. Special Education Teachers create a flexible program and learning environment that provide specialized instruction; establish effective rapport with students; may modify general education curriculum to meet students' needs with supplemental aides, accommodations, and other needed supports; and establish good relationships with parents and with other staff members. This position is for a K-5 site based Behavior Support Self-Contained Classroom Teacher

Physical /Mental Demands
The physical demands of this job require frequent standing, walking, sitting, speaking and hearing. Specific visual abilities are also required. The employee is regularly required to reach with his/her hands and arms and occasionally lift items weighing less than 40 lbs. Additionally, the employee must be able to understand vague and implicit instructions, be able to readily recall facts and details, handle conflict and make effective decisions under pressure. The employee must have the ability to effectively manage the stress of working with students, parents, and other employees representing diverse cultures, personalities, and work styles in a dynamic work environment.

Work Environment

- Valid Alaska initial, professional, or master teaching certificate with an endorsement in Special Education.Evidence of content knowledge shown by:
- a posted degree in the content area of this position; ora posted minor in the content area of this position; orpassing Praxis Subject Assessments scores (formerly Praxis II) in the content area of this position; oran endorsement in the content area of this position
The following are preferred:
- Evidence of experience working with special education students.Experience working collaboratively to support the Individualized Education Plan (IEP) needs of special education students in a public school setting.Experience with or knowledge of School Based Behavior Supports (SBBS) programs.
