Summer Academies Dorm Head - Spanish

POSITION LOCATION : Vermont

Located at Saint Michael's College in Colchester, VT, Middlebury Interactive Languages Summer Academy offers middle and high school students the opportunity to study Arabic, Mandarin Chinese, French, German, or Spanish with skilled language educators in an intensive four week immersion environment.

Dorm Heads work closely with the Director and Assistant Director of Residential Life, the Language Directors of their particular Academy, and the Activity Coordinator to help organize and supervise the residential program while ensuring that Academy policies are upheld. Dorm Heads live in the student residence halls, provide leadership and coaching to the Residential Advisor staff, supervise students, and help to establish a cohesive academic/residential experience. Additionally, Dorm Heads collaborate with the Assistant Language Director to facilitate the integration of academic and residential aspects of the Academy, providing pedagogical support to residential staff.

This is a residential position. All employees will be provided room and board. They will have two full days off during the 4-week session. All employees pay for their travel to and from program locations. Transportation from local airport and train station is provided at both the beginning and the end of the program by MIL. Housing is not provided for family members.

As the Summer Academy Dorm Head, YOU WILL . . .

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Reasonable accomodations may be made to enable individualswith disabilities to perform the essential duties.
  • Provide support, leadership, modeling, and supervision for Residential Advisors in their Academy
  • Assist Director of Residential Life and Assistant Director of Residential Life with providing an efficient and pertinent orientation and specific training for residential staff
  • Work closely with site leaders and promote cohesion and teamwork with site staff and other Academy personnel and effectively assist in creating a strong link between residential and academic aspects of the Academy

Supervisory Responsibilities: This position has no formal supervisory responsibilities.

OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: The below State ments are intended to describe the general nature and scope of work being performed by this position. This is not a complete listing of all responsibilities and/or duties required; other duties may be assigned.
  • Assist the Activity Coordinator in organizing the daily Activity program, dances, Field Day, and other Academy events and lead their Academy's Residential Advisors in implementation of activities
  • Ensure that all students are accounted for each night and report attendance to the administrator on duty and participate in administrator on duty rotation
  • Attend all Academy events, field trips, and activities
  • Demonstrate strong leadership skills in assisting and guiding the residential advisors in developing, planning, and implementing living group meetings, morning assembly and evening programming
  • Coordinate supervision of student free time
  • Provide coverage on RAs days off
  • Organize and implement residential duty schedules

Requirements

MINIMUM REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Previous MIL Summer Academy experience is preferred
  • Preferably a college graduate with teaching experience and strong leadership skills
  • 1-2 years of Residential Life Experience with middle and high school students
  • Native or near-native mastery of the target language and culture

  • Demonstrates high level of energy, enthusiasm, and ability to operate well in a fast-paced, complex immersion environment
  • Possesses excellent communication skills, engages well with others and is articulate and outgoing
  • Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Project, Visio, etc.); Web proficiency
  • Ability to pass required background check
