Department Description:

The School Licensed Practical Nurse provides day-to-day screening services, health services, special care and technical procedures for children in assigned schools within the scope of his/her practice under the supervision of a registered nurse. In accordance with the Nurse Practice Act, Board of Education Policies, Maryland and Federal laws, the School Licensed Practical Nurse is responsible for implementing plans for the health and safety of students, to provide appropriate first aid services and health maintenance making appropriate nursing judgments within the scope of his/her practice. Work is performed in a team relationship under the general supervision of a registered nurse.

Detailed Description:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.
  • Carries out physician's orders for the administration of medications (administered orally, nasogastric or gastrostomy); and is familiar with normal and adverse medication reactions; reports suspected adverse reactions and contraindications to registered nurse;
  • Performs procedures ordered by student's physician, which can include catheterization, ostomy care, tracheostomy care, suctioning or other approved procedures;
  • Uses safe handling and disposal of used "sharps," syringes, tissues, compresses and solutions in touch with body fluids of any kind;
  • Follows hazardous and Infectious Waste Disposal Policy of Prince George's County Public Schools;
  • Maintains inventory and orders needed health room supplies; maintains First Aid Station in health room in an always clean and safe manner;
  • Provides care to ill students until picked-up by parent;
  • Performs necessary screening procedures, such as vision, hearing, scoliosis, head lice or others, in compliance with Maryland State Law, reporting positive findings in accordance with school policies;
  • Conducts student observations based on developed criteria, reporting positive findings to registered nurse;
  • Administers CPR and First Aid according to established guidelines and procedures;
  • Reviews immunization records, following established procedures for non-compliance;
  • Reports all cases of suspect or diagnosed communicable disease to the registered nurse;
  • Reports all cases of environmental conditions, which may adversely affect the safety of health of students or staff to the registered nurse;
  • Maintains all necessary documentation on student health records; complete all required statistical reports, maintains confidentiality in all matters related to student and staff health;
  • Confers with registered nurse and other school personnel to evaluate services, performance, problem solving and plan future activities as it relates to student health;
  • Attends all required meetings or in-services, in order to maintain appropriate professional level of competence; refers students and families to appropriate resources;
  • Maintains and adequate stock of first aid equipment; and
  • Perform related duties as assigned.

  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of general health care and their application to children;
  • Knowledge of nursing procedures and the ability to perform them;
  • Ability to handle highly sensitive areas, such as AIDS, Hepatitis and or other communicable diseases that require skillful interventions;
  • Ability to travel between schools as required or if necessary;
  • Tact, support for staff, parents and students;
  • Ability to work with children using sound judgment in dealing with related problems and concerns; and
  • Ability to assist the registered nurse in data collection and statistical analysis.

  • EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:

    Graduation from an accredited Licensed Practical Nursing school is preferred with at least one (1) year prior experience in a health care setting.

    CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

    Possession of a current Maryland License, current Cardiopulmonary Pulmonary Resuscitation and First Aid certifications and a valid Motor Vehicle Operator's License.

    SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

    No direct supervisory responsibilities.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee may occasionally push or lift up to 25 lbs.
