ABOUT THE SCHOOL/DEPARTMENT

Windy Peak Outdoor Lab School is one of two sites in the Outdoor Education Program with Jefferson County Public Schools. The Outdoor Lab Program has become a rite of passage for sixth grade students across the district building lifelong skills and memories. Windy Peak provides unique, experiential learning in nature's classroom where students develop stewardship through problem solving, team building, decision-making and social interaction.
Historic Windy Peak is located south of Bailey, Colorado, on 200 acres of beautiful mountain terrain.

ABOUT THE JOB

This is a residential position with housing provided. The job touches every aspect of the facility and involves interaction with students. One must be flexible and able to work independently for most of the shift. This is a physically demanding position with the work predominantly janitorial in nature.

Hourly Rate: $14.92, Annual Rate: $31,023

RESPONSIBILITIES

SUMMARY: Assist the On-site manager in the operation of the Outdoor Lab facility, ensuring standards of cleanliness; sanitation; minor maintenance of buildings, grounds, equipment. Keep on-site manager up-to-date regarding the inventory status of materials, equipment, and supply needs. Position requires that the employee live on-site.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

-Perform housekeeping functions.

-Maintain buildings/grounds, including removing snow/weeds/litter, sweeping, mowing, and spraying.

-Perform minor maintenance functions and assist trades crafts in maintaining property. Maintain equipment.

-Secure buildings prior to ending shift.

-Assist with daily operation of furnaces, heaters, boilers, water and septic systems, back-up generator, fuel storage and
distribution system, and site assigned vehicles.

-Move heavy equipment and furniture.

-Assist in monitoring well water storage system and sewage treatment systems.

-Communicate with persons at all levels within the community to accommodate their needs while on site.

-Notify site manager of repairs, maintenance, or emergencies.

-Inform On-Site Manager of needed custodial supplies.

-Assist with providing environmental management by inspecting, observing, evaluating, and following-up on action required for
ponds, streams, wetlands, forest, meadows, and trails.

-Assist with ranching functions, including irrigation, hay meadow management, and fencing.

-Perform other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION AND TRAINING: High school diploma/GED required, plus vocational school or short term courses.

EXPERIENCE: 2-3 years experience in custodial maintenance and/or ranch related operations.

SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, & EQUIPMENT: Basic mathematics, writing, and carpentry skills. Mechanical systems knowledge. Operating knowledge of tractor, water/weed sprayer pumps, sanding truck, shop sanders, power saws, and chain saws preferred at hire.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, & REGISTRATIONS: Valid Colorado driver's license. CPR and First Aid certifications highly recommended.

SUPERVISION/TECHNICAL RESPONSIBILITY: N/A

CONTACTS: Daily contact with persons within department/work unit to resolve problems or negotiate matters, and with students to provide a service. Weekly contact with persons outside department/work unit to resolve problems or negotiate matters.

SAFETY TO SELF AND OTHERS: High exposure to self to disease due to handling bodily fluids. Medium exposure to self to bruises and cuts due to handling tools, glass, and metal; to heat burns due to welding, steam, and hot water; to fractured bones due to slipping or falling from heights; to hernia due to moving heavy equipment or furniture; to loss of limb/sight due to operating chain saw, snow blower, sander, grinders, welders, and weed eaters; and to disfigurement due to flying debris and burns. Medium exposure to self to repetitive motion injuries due to excessive shoveling/mopping; to chemical burns due to battery acid; and to fatality due to automobile, chain saw, or electric shock accidents. Low exposure to others to same injuries if a person in this position does not maintain the safety of the site and/or does not manage equipment or tools safely while others are present.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to climb or balance. The employee is occasionally required to sit and taste or smell. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and frequently lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance, color, and peripheral vision; depth perception; and ability to adjust focus.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to outside weather conditions. The employee is frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts and fumes or airborne particles. The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions; high, precarious places; toxic or caustic chemicals; risk of electrical shock; and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

MENTAL FUNCTIONS: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to communicate and use interpersonal skills. Frequently required to analyze, coordinate, compute, and synthesize. Occasionally required to copy and compare, instruct, evaluate, compile, and negotiate.

JUDGMENT AND DECISION MAKING: Work is assigned by supervisor, Principal, and self. Requires knowledge of the site and available equipment and tools to identify safety and maintenance needs, determine appropriate tools for the jobs, and determine if it is safe to operate equipment in the given environment. Work is guided by supervisor directives. Decision making requires collaboration with supervisor when needed. Errors in decision making could result in injury to self or others, mechanical breakdown and inability to complete work, and interruption of student classes, programs, and activities. Supervisor is occasionally involved in decision making.

DIVERSITY OF DUTIES: Duties require cross training in carpentry, mechanical systems, environmental management, minor HVAC, welding, basic plumbing, and student management skills. Responsibilities cross over into several departments on a daily basis.
