JOB/POSITION TITLE: Elementary/Middle School Counselor

OFFICE/CAMPUS: Faculty/Bento EL (50%), Kong MS (50%)

REPORTS TO:  Elementary Principal/MS Principal

STATUS:  10 months, Full-time, Exempt

 

PRIMARY PURPOSE: Provide support to students, teachers and parents with the overarching goal of student success. A proactive, developmentally appropriate school counseling program for students is curriculum based; it provides for the early identification of critical problems in children/teens and early intervention to prevent these problems from interfering with learning. The primary objective for this counselor would be to develop classroom lessons, consultation and coordination with staff and parents, individual and small group counseling, and parent education.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES/FUNCTIONS:

  • To build relationship with, and share the love Jesus Christ with students, teachers and parents so that a faith in Christ can flourish and someday bear fruit.
  • Assist teachers and principal in identifying social, emotional, behavioral, and academic concerns to ensure success in all aspects of school and home life.
  • Proactively assist teachers in developing and implementing plans to support student progress and growth.
  • Provide instructional support through creating and teaching guidance curriculum.
  • Support students and parents through one on one or group counseling.
  • Manage the social and emotional needs of students in a developmentally appropriate manner and coordinate and implement the Yale RULER program.
  • Establish effective liaison with various community offices that may provide additional professional help to stakeholders.
  • Support teachers by participating in student conferences as needed.
  • Maintain accurate records and ensure their confidentiality, using legal and ethical discretion when sharing.
  • Inform Administration of any student concerns in a timely manner.
  • Provides for a smooth transition from elementary to middle school, which may include orientation programs for students and parents.
  • Assist with coordination and administration of the testing program (CTP IV, CPAA, SAT, ASPIRE select materials, schedule testing, interpret results, communicate results).
  • Assist with maintaining records and trend data of internal and external assessments.
  • Upholds and enforces school rules, administrative regulations and board policy.
  • Maintains professional competence and continuous improvement through professional development.
  • Be a positive change agent in the school and play the role of an advocate for the success of all students.
  • Maintains a professional office environment for counseling sessions.
  • Manage counseling budget

 

OTHER DUTIES/FUNCTIONS:

  • Work collaboratively with Principal, Vice-Principal, Curriculum Coordinator, Christian Ministries Coordinator and Academic Resource Teachers.
  • Collaborate with Principals and Admissions Directors on orientation for parents of prospective applicants.
  • Attend faculty meetings and serve, as needed, on staff committees.
  • Assist the principals in providing an atmosphere conducive to learning and teaching.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Supervision of students (playground, field trips, etc.).

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Equipment and Software Use: Computer skills, photocopier, multi-line push button telephone, Smart Board, iPad, Google docs/calendars/forms, FinalSite, myBackpack.
  • Work Hours: 7:30 a.m. - 4;.00 p.m., Monday - Friday. Some weekday after-hours and weekend work may be required.
  • Mental Demands: Attention to detail, alert, ability to concentrate. Exercises good judgement, able to make sound decisions.
  • Physical Demands: Sitting for extended periods, corrected vision.
  • Social Demands: Ability to communicate with all stakeholders in a friendly and concise way. Exhibit enthusiasm and interpersonal skills to build community and well-being.

 

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

  • Spiritual: Must have accepted Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior of his/her life and demonstrate a living relationship with Jesus Christ as described in "The Baptist Faith and Message", the tenets of the Southern Baptist denomination.
  • Skills/Knowledge: Empathetic, ability to listen and communicate clearly. Must have skills to do group counseling. Knowledge in areas of psychology, childhood development, parenting skills, behavior modification, and diagnostic education skills. Effective verbal and written communication skills. Ability to work with a variety of people; team player . Have excellent integrity and demonstrate good moral character and initiative.
  • Education/Training: MA degree in School Counseling . Undergraduate degree in education or psychology preferred.
  • Experience: Minimum of three (3) years counseling experience at the elementary or middle school level preferred.
