  • TYPE OF APPOINTMENT ISSUED: This position is included in the Educational Officers' Bargaining Unit and will be filled as a limited term temporary appointment. Probationary service credit and tenure are not granted for temporary appointments.
  • MINIMUM QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: DISTRICT EDUCATIONAL SPECIALIST II
    Training: Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor's degree in education with specialization in one or more subject matters appropriate to the areas of assignment.
    Preferred Education: Master's degree from an accredited college or university in education or subject field appropriate to the area of assignment.
    Experience: Six (6) years of responsible professional work experience in education of which four (4) years shall have been in teaching and two (2) years in curriculum or program planning, as appropriate.
    Preferred Experience: Experience as a high school teacher including working with identified at-risk students or special program services; and work experience in program design, implementation, and monitoring.
    Knowledge of: Foundations of curriculum and instruction; instructional media and computers; foundations of American education; principles of learning and individual differences; tests and measurements; purposes, methods, and materials pertinent to one or more subject matters and/or program area(s) of assignment; laws, rules, regulations and administrative procedures pertinent to the area(s) of assignment.
    Ability to: Provide leadership, planning and coordination in the areas of assignment at the district level; communicate effectively with others both orally and in writing; operate computer and other business machines; use tools, equipment, instruments and devices appropriate to one or more subject matters and/or program areas of assignment.
    Desired Skills/Abilities: Manage curriculum and instructional program in an alternative school setting; deal effectively with state, departmental and other officials to accomplish program goals; maintain awareness of developments in curriculum or program areas; organize/prioritize work and multi-task to maintain an effective work pace under deadlines.
  • A WRITTEN EXAMINATION/ASSIGNMENT MAY BE ADMINISTERED TO HELP DETERMINE POSSESSION OF THE KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES PORTIONS OF THE MINIMUM QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS.
  • Duties and Responsibilities: Under the general supervision of the Complex Area Superintendent of the Nanakuli-Waianae Complex Area, the District Educational Specialist II:
    1. Extensively coordinates with the Office of Student Support Services (OSSS) on the leadership, technical direction, and guidance for the effective administration, operations, communications, and program support related to the Alternative Learning Center (ALC) at Wai`anae High School to provide educational and support services to identified students involved in or at high risk for involvement in the criminal justice system.
    2. Assists in the development and implementation of ALC and related program priorities within NW CA; assists in conducting ongoing assessments of the ALC through formative and summative approaches using data to inform program revisions; and collaborates with other ALCs, as needed, throughout the Department to ensure there is a proper array of services available to all students in the ALC and related programs.
    3. Leads the engagement efforts with other institutions, businesses, and community agencies in the ALC's development, evolution, and improvement initiatives and its related or comparable programs at other public/private agency or community organization gatherings.
    4. Directs and reviews research requests and projects to inform decision making related to ALC priorities; keeps abreast of best practices and research studies on a national and international basis; disseminates appropriate information to ALC staff and the field (as applicable) in a timely manner; and/or prepares reports and testimonies to Department leadership, the BOE, and the State Legislature.
    5. Performs other related duties as required or assigned.
  • SALARY RANGE: EOSR-7, $95,483 to $135,163. Department of Education certificated employees will be placed on the salary range in accordance with Department regulations. All others will be placed on the first step of $95,483.
  • WORK YEAR AND BENEFITS: This appointment will be on a 12-month basis with vacation and sick leave provided according to applicable regulations.
