The Career and Technical Education (CTE) Instructional Support Specialist (ISS) is charged with coaching CTE teachers in order to enhance student learning. The duties and responsibilities of the CTE ISS include, but are not limited to, providing in-class support for all CTE teachers, developing, implementing, managing, and monitoring professional growth activities that enhance the quality of classroom instruction.

The Specialist ensures that CTE curriculum and instruction follow state approved Career and Technical Education standards, workforce needs, and adheres to the Perkins Grant guidelines. This individual reports directly to the CTE Cluster Manager.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Facilitate the observation of classroom instruction to identify teachers' instructional needs by adhering to the CTE coaching cycle.
  2. Work with school administrators to develop comprehensive goals for teachers and student achievement.
  3. Complete and maintain instructional support site visit reports
  4. Coordinate professional development activities (i.e., modeling of lessons, mentoring, conducting workshops, etc.) for CTE teachers.
  5. Serve as CTE liaison to school administration and other Central & Network Office staff.
  6. Facilitate the coordination and implementation of CTE initiatives such as: Teacher professional development activities and Coordinate CTE and any related CPS assessment
  7. Encourage and support the integration of the curriculum through a variety of workshop and presentations at various meetings (i.e. coaches, counselors, work-based learning specialists and curriculum developers sessions).
  8. Maintain database for staff members participating in various CTE training (Learning Hub)
  9. Work in collaboration with other CPS departments to align and reinforce instructional initiatives.

Skills:

  1. Experience providing instructional coaching to new and veteran teachers.
  2. Strong collaboration and problem-solving skills
  3. Ability to present instructional pedagogy for individual and team development.
  4. Practical understanding of urban high schools and the urban district setting for school improvement.
  5. Project planning capabilities, with experience aligning and managing activities toward execution of identified goals.
  6. Self-starter with ability to conduct multiple projects concurrently, both independently and as a member of a collaborative team.
  7. 'Can-do,' solutions-oriented approach to problem solving.
  8. Ability and willingness to learn and adapt quickly amidst new and shifting priorities.
  9. Strong leadership and team building skills.
  10. Exceptional written communication, verbal communication, organizational, and technology skills.
  11. A track record of success as demonstrated by superior academic and professional achievement.


Type of Experience and Number of Years:

  • Required: Minimum 3 years teaching experience; Minimum 5 years in education; Experience providing one-on-one and large-group professional development to teachers; proven track record of distinguished teaching ability.
  • Preferred: CTE teaching experience.

  • Required: Bachelors in Education.
  • Preferred: Masters or higher inEducation


Residency Requirement : As a condition of employment with the Chicago Public Schools (CPS), employees are required to live within the geographic boundaries of the City of Chicago within six months of his or her CPS hire date and maintain residency throughout their employment with the district.
