CLASS TITLE : Career Research and Development/Work-Based Learning Teacher (0.5 Patapsco High School)

TITLE CODE: T30200

REPORTS TO : Principal

DEFINITION : Provide instructional and leadership services that prepare students with the related academic, critical thinking, computer technology, workplace readiness, and technical skills essential to pursuing career pathways in career research and development. Coordinate students in work-based learning experiences, including internships, apprenticeships, and capstones. Perform other duties as assigned.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES :

Provide instruction and course/program management at the high school level in areas of career research and development, work-based learning, and related instruction.
Demonstrate knowledge and implement a "hands-on" approach to critical thinking and problem-solving skills needed for current and future industry employment standards.
Provide instruction in teamwork, communications, problem solving, decision making, and computer technology which relate to workplace and higher education skills needed in business and industry.
Collaborate with staff and postsecondary institutions to develop and maintain career pathways which prepare students for apprenticeship, community college, or university degree programs.
Prepare instructional materials, maintain equipment, and manage materials of instruction which maximize the resources needed to deliver a diverse instructional program.
Understand and effectively relate to and teach students ages 13 to 18 as they become productive young adults and members of the community.
Lead student experiences in career field-related student organizations.
Contribute to the mission of the school by striving to attain school improvement plan and career completer goals.
Partner with employers and community groups to promote and advance technical skills.
Participate in recruitment and selection of students.
Create an instructional environment that is conducive to the intellectual, physical, social, and emotional development of students.
Communicate standards, achievements, and deficiencies to students and parents. Meet with students and parents.
Maintain complete and accurate student academic, attendance, and disciplinary records. Monitor and assess students' academic progress.
Collaborate with school administrators, other teachers, paraeducators, parents, and community members in the education of students.
Attend staff meetings. Serve on various committees.
Maintain accurate records for student work-based learning according to Risk Management procedures and child labor and employment of minor's law.
Monitor students at their work-based learning sites to assess their skill development, provide support, and track appropriateness of workplace conditions.
Establish relationships with business, local workforce navigators, and higher education partners for the purpose of providing work-based learning experiences, registered apprenticeships, and program support.
Monitor and assist in the maintenance of required documentation for registered apprenticeships and work-based learning experiences.
Perform other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS :

Education, Training and Experience :
Experience and education commensurate with requirements for Maryland Standard Professional certification required. Teaching experience preferred (student teaching acceptable).

Licenses and Certificates:
Possession of, or eligibility for, a Maryland Standard Professional Certification in an applicable secondary academic content area as defined by COMAR 13A.12.02.16 with eligibility for a work-based learning coordinator endorsement.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities :
Knowledge and expertise with computer equipment operations and software applications.

Knowledge of curriculum, effective instructional techniques, instructional materials, and equipment.

Strong human relations skills and the ability to maintain relationships and open communications with business partners and other stakeholders to identify real-world applications of content.

Effective organization and communication skills.

Flexibility in program implementation strategies.

Skills in preparing and implementing lesson plans in order to effectively instruct students.

Skill in communicating with students, their parents, administrators, business partners, and others.

Skill in supervising students and managing behavior both in the classroom and in work-based learning placements.

Knowledge of and skill in the use of database, internet, spreadsheet, word processing, and related applications.

Ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships with students, parents, business partners, and staff.

Ability to maintain confidential information.

Ability to assess workplace safety and follow Risk Management protocols for students in the workplace.

PHYSICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS :
The work of this class is generally performed in a school environment. Work may require the ability to move around the school and classroom. Travel to various and diverse work-based learning sites is required.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
Requires attendance at after-school and evening meetings and events.

FLSA STATUS : Exempt

Eligible for membership in the Maryland State Retirement System.

A criminal offense does not necessarily exclude an applicant from employment with BCPS. Factors such as passage of time since the offense, the nature of the violation, and the extent of rehabilitation will be taken into consideration.

Pre-Employment Requirements:
  • All persons employed by the Baltimore County Public Schools, regular and temporary, are required to be fingerprinted and have a criminal background investigation (State of Maryland, Senate Bill 315, effective October 1, 1986) completed. The fee charged for fingerprinting is $81. An identification card will be issued which must be shown prior to employment.
  • Anyone offered employment is required to provide proper identification and documentation of eligibility for employment in the US.
  • If you have military experience you will be asked to provide a copy of DD214.
  • Official transcripts for all higher education must be received prior to contract signing.
  • Some positions will require employees to undergo a physical examination and/or drug testing.
  • All newly hired personnel must attend a Badges and Benefits session.
  • Additional job verification will be required for salary credit.
