Position Overview
The Whittle School & Studios' academic model is rooted in deep mastery of foundational skills and content expertise, coupled with support in developing a growth mindset that builds stamina, confidence, and resilience over time. The Whittle School Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) curriculum curates and combines the best curricula from around the world. The Whittle learning environment endeavors to globalize science and engage in collaboration and exchange worldwide. Our makerspaces will be staffed by individuals with expertise not just in using and maintaining the equipment and overseeing its safe operation, but who also have expertise in design thinking and leading a creative process. We seek a Director of Innovation to take a lead role in implementing this vision for our program and our makerspaces. In this school-wide role, the Director will collaborate with teachers, integrating components of technology, engineering, and design thinking into disciplines for meaningful and powerful learning experiences for students in the Early Learning Center, the Lower School, the Middle School, and the Upper School. As a member of an interdisciplinary instructional team that employs project-based, personalized, multi-disciplinary, inquiry-based approaches to teaching and learning, the Director of Innovation and Design will manage the makerspace, including strategic planning; selecting, procuring, and managing supplies and tools; and overseeing the room schedule. This faculty member will teach fundamental technical and design skills to students as well as give critical feedback to students about their ideas and prototypes.
Additionally, the Director of Innovation and Design will:
  • genuinely enjoy the company of children and adolescents 
    • be passionate about developing a relationship and sense of trust with each student 
  • seek to engage with students both in the classroom and the greater Whittle community in a variety of ways outside the classroom

The following are highly desirable qualifications for the listed position:
  • Bachelor's degree in relevant field
  • Master's level degree or above in relevant area preferred
  • Minimum 5 years of teaching experience, preferably in an independent school environment
  • Participation and leadership in professional learning communities, grade-level teams, and other collaborative communities to design and plan instructions, to improve practice, and to achieve student outcomes
  • Drive and energy to thrive in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial environment
  • A strong understanding of the design and making process: brainstorming, ideating, and prototyping.
  • Design, programming, electronics, and fabrication expertise
  • Proficiency with wood shop tools, digital fabrication, 3D printers and CNC machining
  • Proficiency with CAD and 3D modeling software
  • Proficiency with Arduino and designing with electronics

Whittle School & Studios offers our staff competitive total compensation packages that are either at or above market, dependent upon the position.
