THE OPPORTUNITY

Kindergarten Teacher

Lighthouse Community Charter School is looking for a Kindergarten teacher who is relentlessly committed to ensuring that traditionally underserved students of color achieve our mission of completing college and securing the career of their choice. Lighthouse teachers believe that this important mission is not only attainable; it is essential to transforming our Oakland community. Specifically, we are looking for educators who deeply understand the realities of urban education, which includes both the rich set of assets and the myriad challenges faced by our students and families, and who respond with unrelenting high expectations in their hearts; willingness to problem-solve around complex challenges in their practice, and who can craft and deliver a plan that results in our student deep understanding of their social and academic identities to become proficient learners as demonstrated on internal and external assessment tools.

You will offer our students:

  • Design backward-planned, interdisciplinary project-based learning investigations of interdisciplinary humanities (English, social studies, and science) content that are student-centered and inquiry-based, including problem-solving and the development of both character and academic skills.
  • Implement in-depth learning experiences that encourage curiosity and passion, incorporate fieldwork and experts in the community, are grounded in deep studies of complex texts, and culminate in authentic opportunities to share final products with the community.
  • Design and implement writers' workshops to support personalized writing instruction in small groups.
  • Facilitate math work time during which student start with a grade level academic challenge, move into standards-based independent practice or small group work with the teacher. This work is tracked and accelerates using classroom-based assessment systems to ensure all students master grade-level standards.

Most Important as Kindergarten Teachers, you will bring your high expectations to belief in the following ways:
  • Consistently implement oral language literacy instruction.
  • Teach and engage families in closing academic gaps at an accelerated pace for students who have not had access to high-quality pre-schools.
  • Establish a safe, learner-driven, engage classroom community that is centered on grade level standards.
  • Develop classroom-based systems that will provide adequate support for students to demonstrate knowledge of internal and external assessment tools.
  • Leverage developmental research, language acquisition theories, and information about students unique background to support and hold all students to grade-level standards.

RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Builds and maintains classroom culture that is supportive and learning-centered, undergirded by strong management, efficient procedures and systems, but most evident in the full inclusion of African-American boys, students with trauma, and students with IEPs in the social and learning community.
  • Leverage school-wide curriculum aligned to the common core standards in reading, writing, and speaking.
  • Plan and implement effective, grade-level lessons that are learner-driven, navigate the tension between directive and facilitative approaches and are modified or differentiated to provide access and results for Students with IEPs and ELL scholars .
  • Urgency driven by data that prioritizes Individualized and small group Instruction with standards-based work stations during which time students are given authentic opportunities to explore their depth of knowledge in multiple ways, given tools to tackle challenging work, and supported to demonstrate their knowledge at the highest quality.
  • Rigorous assessments through which students wrestle with complex integrated problems, are taught to mastery in a culture of reteach informed by data.
  • Depth of pedagogical knowledge, commitment to professional excellence, and deep desire to contribute one's own unique and specific expertise to the team, "come to lead"
  • Attend and actively participate in professional development activities, collaborative planning teams, and staff meetings to improve teaching craft.
  • Administer Lighthouse's student policies and procedures (i.e. attendance, dress code, etc.).

Abide by all state and federal mandates in reporting sexual or physical abuse and neglect.

  • MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
    • B.A. or B.S. required Masters Degree preferred
    • Appropriate California Credential required
    • 3+ years of teaching experience in an urban education setting serving low-income students of color preferred
    • Experience with Google apps
    • Bilingual in Spanish a plus


    TIME COMMITMENT

    200-day work year including 23 student-free days for collaboration with colleagues and families.

    Common Building Hours: All teachers are expected to maintain hours of 8:00 - 4:00 pm on M, T, Th, F, and 8:00-5:00 on Wednesday for Professional Development.
