The Chicago Public Schools (CPS) has set ambitious goals to ensure that every child, in every community, has access to a high quality education that prepares them for success in college and career.

The Deputy General Counsel oversees employee discipline and dismissal matters for the district:

• Managing attorneys, paraprofessionals and support staff assigned to the Labor & Discipline Group;

• Managing outside legal counsel retained to represent the Board or its agents;

• Personally representing the Board in dismissal prosecutions;

• Creating and managing litigation budgets;

• Reviewing and editing written work as well as providing guidance and strategy to Labor & Discipline attorneys;

• Assisting with the development and promulgation of Board policies; and

• Reporting and updating potential claims to the Board's insurers.

In order to be successful executing the above responsibilities, a Deputy General Counsel must possess the following qualifications:

Type of Education and License Required: Must be licensed to practice law and in good standing in the State of Illinois. Must be a member of the federal jury bar.

Type of Experience and Number of Years: Ten or more years of litigation experience, including trial experience in state court and federal court; preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

• Experience as a trial attorney with significant first chair experience;

• Experience managing attorneys, paraprofessionals and support staff;

• Strong communication skills;

• Ability to quickly analyze and prioritize problems and accurately decide when to escalate;

• Ability to build effective relationships throughout the Law Department and other Board departments;

• Organizational skills and ability to manage numerous subordinates and cases simultaneously; and

• Demonstrated ability to take ownership of and solve problems, to expeditiously assess issues and provide sound legal advice.

Residency requirement: Board employees are required to be actual residents of the City of Chicago within six months of beginning employment and to maintain residency during the course of their employment.
