Reports to: Executive Director for Madison Park Technical Vocational High School

Boston Public Schools is seeking a high-energy, visionary and dynamic educational leader to serve as Headmaster of our only vocational technical high school. We are seeking a highly effective leader with a track record of success who possesses an exemplary managerial, instructional, and operational skillset. This leader will be responsible for leading the school to become one of the City's most important assets that is a pathway to college and career opportunities for students. We seek a proven leader who is committed to transforming the culture and instructional program using a student-centered, collaborative and innovative approach to create a top-tier school.

The leader we are looking for will model effective leadership defined by integrity, clear and open communication, fairness, high standards, and an understanding of the needs and interests of a diverse community.

The Headmaster of Madison Park must ensure that every student leaves the school ready for the demands of their next steps in education, college, career, and life. We are seeking a leader with the vision and experience to create, foster and ensure a school environment where students graduate with the instructional, vocational and interpersonal skills necessary for success in college and career. This leader will also demonstrate respect and commitment to the local community, instilling pride in the school among all students, staff, parents, and community partners.

Responsibilities

Instructional Leadership
    • Demonstrate high expectations for all students and staff and a commitment to providing the support required to attain higher expectations.
    • Recruit, hire, develop, and retain diverse teachers and staff to create an education team that meets the learning opportunity needs of all students in the school, including those in regular education, students with disabilities, and English Language Learners.
    • Ensure high levels of scholarship and continuously improve school performance through rigorous, standards-based academic and vocational programming with measurable outcomes.
    • Analyze student achievement results to identify areas in greatest need of improvement and to inform school improvement efforts

  • Oversee instructional teams and structures to promote strong planning and instruction.

  • Oversee the delivery of impactful professional vocational and standards-based academic professional learning.
Management and Operations
    • Ensure a safe and nurturing learning environment for students, staff, and families.
    • Align the use of people, money, and materials to the school's instructional priorities.
    • Develop an organizational structure and schedule that supports professional growth, fosters common planning opportunities and maximizes learning time for students.

  • Use frequent observation, data, and evaluation guidelines to assign well-supported ratings for performance.
  • Oversee the day to day management of all aspects of the school, its facilities, and its operations.

Family, Community, and Student Engagement
  • Effectively and consistently communicate with school stakeholders, including students, families, and community partners.
  • Provide opportunities for significant partnerships that extend and broaden authentic learning opportunities for students, including within the vocational curriculum.
  • Cultivate and sustain meaningful partnerships with families and community members that support student achievement and wellbeing.
  • Implement the BPS policies around school-based management and shared decision-making, including establishing and supporting School Parent Councils, School Site Councils, and Personnel Subcommittees.
Professional Culture
  • Establish a collegial environment that honors and encourages lifelong learning among all community members.
  • Foster shared leadership through participatory decision-making and a commitment to collaboration.
  • Identify key levers that foster accelerated school improvement/turnaround.
  • Demonstrate cultural competencies and fair and just leadership through behaviors and decision-making.

Qualifications
Required
  • Masters degree; Doctorate preferred.
  • Licensure or eligibility for licensure in Massachusetts as a Vocational Technical Principal/Assistant Principal.
  • Demonstrated success in leading in a diverse environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to assemble and maintain highly qualified and diverse leadership, teaching and staff teams, and to share leadership with those who possess different skills, especially in vocational education.
  • Demonstrated success in partnership building and creative problem solving.
  • Demonstrated leadership qualities, interpersonal skills, and personal characteristics necessary for working effectively with students, families, community and staff.
  • Experience supervising, evaluating and developing a teaching faculty.
  • Strong administrative skills including organizational, operational and fiscal experience.
  • Current authorization to work in the United States - Candidates must have such authorization by their first day of employment
