POSITION TITLE: MENTAL HEALTH SPECIALIST - 223A

REPORTS TO:
Supervisor, Threat Assessment; Director. Office of Student Services

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

Master's Degree in social work, counseling, or a related
behavioral science field; and, one or more years of experience providing therapeutic services to
children, adolescents, and families with issues related to mental health and co-occurring
disorders.

STATE REQUIREMENTS/QUALIFICATIONS:

Must possess Virginia license as Licensed
Clinical Social Worker, Licensed Professional Counselor. Licensed School Psychologist,
Licensed Clinical Psychologist, or be able to obtain license within two years.

handle or feel objects, tools, student supplies, or controls~ reach with hands and arms, climb or

stand and occasionally to run. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds
and occasionally lift and/or move more than 50 pounds with assistance. Specific vi sion abilities
required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, and the ability to
adjust focus . Specific hearing abilities required by this job include the ability to hear the spoken
word at a nom1ai volume and at 20 feet with back turned. The employee must be able to drive a
car both long and short distances. The employee must be able to effectively present infomlation
to groups of people both in and out oftbe School Division. This will require standing for long
periods of time and it is expected that the employee will transport and handle cases of fonns,
professional development materials, booklets, and audio~visual equipment. This position
demands a high level of performance and the employee must be able to work long days, meet
deadlines, learn new procedures rapidly, and adjust to changes in procedures.

BASIC FUNCTION/NATURE OF WORK:

The basic function of the Mental Health Specialist is to improve
coordination of services and transition support through targeted case management for al~risk
youth experiencing serious mental health issues that interfere with their ability to attend school,
who are returning from psychiatric hospitalization, and/or who pose a serious threat of targeted
violence related to mental health issues.
