The Summer String Camp will provide dedicated instruction for violin, viola, cello and upright bass to students who are entering grades 5-8, and who have prior experience playing. This program is free and only open to PPS students.

Up to 10 staff members will deliver instruction in large and small group settings, if possible private or duet lessons will be provided. The Summer String Camp can also serve as additional audition preparation for students wishing to apply to CAPA 6-12 in the fall of the school year and strengthen skills developed during the 2018-19 school year.

Reports To: Coordinator, Performing Arts, Arts Education

Salary:
5 days at 7.0 hours per day at Workshop Rate ($23.32 per hour)

Program Dates: June 17-21, 2019, 9:00am - 3:00pm, with a 30 minute lunch

Location: Allegheny Traditional Academy

NOTE: Hours and number of locations are subject to change based on overall student participation.

Qualifications:
- Valid Pennsylvania K-12 Music Education teaching certification preferred.

- Experience teaching music at a 4-8 grade level with a strong teaching background string pedagogy and performance.

Essential Job Functions:
A strong candidate will be able to:

1. Design, teach, and conduct both small group and large group lessons with fellow team members. Lessons will cover instrumental performance; instrument care; practicing techniques; sight reading and music theory for students in grades 5-8 for the 2019-20 school year.

2. Enrich students' playing abilities beyond their current level; and commit to the growth and development of youth.

2. Perform administrative duties (i.e. take weekly attendance, contact students' parents; provide end-of-program progress reports; set-up and tear-down classrooms in various locations; keep track of instrumental inventory at each site, etc.).

3. Participate in collaborative team planning (i.e. determining supplies needed, placement of students, etc.).

4. Have knowledge and an understanding of the PPS music curriculum (for beginning and intermediate instrumental music).

5. Provide group supervision of students with attention to behavior and group management, safety, security and skill development.

Additional Job Information:
Internal employees that are on a leave of absence when school ends are not eligible for summer opportunities. Internal employees receiving an unsatisfactory rating during the preceding school year are not eligible for summer opportunities.
