MISSION
YouthBuild DC Public Charter School (YouthBuild PCS) is an alternative high school for young people seeking to transform their lives by re-engaging in their education in a non-traditional school environment. YouthBuild PCS prepares students for post-secondary education and the workplace by offering, in English and Spanish, academic, vocational and workforce development programs. YouthBuild PCS believes that service to the community is an essential part of the transformative process. Therefore, students serve their community through volunteer projects and by creating housing for low-income residents in the Washington, DC metropolitan area.

RESPONSIBILITIES
The Academic Dean at YouthBuild PCS is a career-building opportunity for a secondary teacher-leader. This role will provide an aspiring school leader with the opportunity to build skills and experience through job-embedded professional development. The ideal candidate will be team-oriented; possess a growth-mindset; embrace data to drive decision-making; and believe that opportunity youth can achieve the highest levels of success.

The Academic Dean's specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Instructional Leadership
  • Serve on school leadership team, and collaborate with the other school leaders to develop, monitor and maintain high academic and behavioral expectations for all students and teachers
  • Refine and expand the school's academic program including GED preparation, English as a Second Language, construction training, and Career Technical Education (CTE) integration
  • Design a system for monitoring the construction certification component of the YouthBuild model
  • Select and manage the adoption of all instructional resources
  • Assist instructional staff in the development of lesson plans and mechanisms to track progress towards meeting individualized academic outcomes
  • Participate in the recruitment and hiring of instructional staff
Professional Development
  • Coach, supervise, and evaluate instructional staff through informal classroom visits, regular formal and informal classroom observations, lesson plan review, and written evaluations;
  • Manage the instructional coaching program including coordinating with coaches from TenSquare, YouthBuild PCS' school improvement partner
  • Develop and implement professional development aligned to the school's academic vision and student achievement outcomes
Student Achievement and Assessment
  • Oversee the assessment program; coordinate all assessments including but not limited to GED, CASAS, Tests of Adult Basic Education (TABE), Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), and Home Builders Institute (HBI)
  • Collect, analyze and review student achievement data in coordination with teachers and the leadership team and drive revision of instructional plans in response to assessment and other student level data
  • Facilitate the examination of data for the purpose of teacher reflection, improved practice, and programmatic changes leading to improve student outcomes
  • Collaborate with Special Education Coordinator to ensure that all students are served effectively
  • Work in tandem with Dean of School Culture to celebrate and incentivize student achievement
  • Complete other duties as outlined by the school leadership
EXPERIENCE, QUALIFICATIONS, AND COMPETENCIES
Successful candidates will possess the following qualifications:
  • Experience working with opportunity youth, urban youth, or adult education preferred
  • Bachelor's degree required; concentration or advanced degree in education preferred.
  • At least five years of teaching experience; secondary education experience and experience with the revised GED a plus
  • At least one year of proven experience effectively managing a team
  • Proficiency in Spanish a plus
