Executive Director of Sports Administration

The Executive Director of Sports Administration provides leadership for CPS' athletic programs districtwide to enable schools to provide safe, coordinated and high quality competitive and intramural events that promote athletic skills, school pride, citizenship, increase student engagement, and academic achievement.

​The Executive Director of Sports Administration will be held accountable for the following responsibilities:

Strategic Planning

  • Lead the development of policies, regulations, guidelines and procedures pertaining to implementation and evaluation of K-12 interscholastic programs, including staff development, community partnerships, and resource development.

  • Provide leadership and management for district-wide athletics program goals and objectives using effective strategies to close the achievement and graduation gap.

  • Supervise development of program design in alignment with the department's continuous improvement work plan and the district's vision and goals.

  • Assist with the development, implementation and monitoring of corrective actions under school board policy.

  • Develop strategic plans and goal setting for the Office of Sports Administration.

  • Secure insurance certificates for usage of outside venues as well as CPS facilities and stadium as needed.



Budgeting

  • Monitor and authorize expenditures in accordance with established guidelines for grants, state and local funding.

  • Plan, develop, and implement annual yearly athletic budget including selection of materials, equipment, and supplies used in the district's interscholastic sports programs.

  • Identify and prioritize resource needs and develops an outreach program to identify and solicit community resources.

  • Prepare and support the preparation of proposals for the acquisition of funds from non-district sources and provides direction for the proper expenditure of such funds.



Supervision and Support of Staff

  • Provide operational leadership to support school leaders as it relates to athletic programs and manage the implementation of school athletic programs.

  • Attend state and regional athletic competitions representing CPS and the Office of Sports Administration

  • Liaise with Principals and Elementary Network Coordinators to address and resolves sports operations issues.

  • Ensure the compliance of all athletic programming as it relates to staffing and the safety and well being of all students in alignment with Board policy and applicable laws and regulations.

  • Supervise, monitor, and evaluate the performance of assigned personnel.



Communication and Collaboration of Staff

  • Define and articulate a district-wide vision for sports and the Office of Sports Administration

  • Provide leadership and guidance to district staff in order to achieve program objectives.

  • Design, promote and implement equitable district-wide athletic program changes and monitor fidelity to changes.

  • Provide communication to the cabinet and senior leadership to solicit their presence and participation at district athletics events.

  • Collaborate with district and school-based administrators in developing quality athletic programs that improve academic outcomes in diverse communities.

  • Partner with the Chicago Park District officials throughout the year to manage the co-sharing of sports facilities.

  • Increase the presence and reach of the Office of Sports Administration's social media accounts highlighting stories about CPS' athletes, coaches, and programs.

  • Performs additional ad hoc duties assigned.



Type of Education Required:

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in education, sports administration or a related field required. Master's degree preferred.



Type of Experience Required :

  • Minimum of five (5) years of successful experience as a Principal or Athletic Administrator required

  • Familiarity with the Chicago Public Schools' interscholastic sports programs preferred

  • Extensive experience directing complex projects or programs with multiple teams, while meeting regular deliverables and engaging in continuous improvement



Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of public school laws and policies as they relate to the oversight and delivery of athletics and intramural sports.

  • Evidence of strong conceptual, analytical, organizational and management knowledge and skills.

  • Exceptional oral and written communications.

  • Team building and leadership; interpersonal relations.

  • Development and implementation of programs/projects and parent outreach activities.

  • Ability to gather and analyze data and develop standards for evaluating results and services.

  • Demonstrated leadership skill and ability, including evidence of the ability to collaborate with diverse individuals.



Residency Requirement :

As a condition of employment with the Chicago Public Schools (CPS), employees are required to live within the geographic boundaries of the City of Chicago within six months of his or her CPS hire date and maintain residency throughout their employment with the district. ~cb~ #LI-AH1
