POSITION TITLE: Dean of Students

REPORTS TO: Principal
Assistant Principal

QUALIFICATIONS:

Required Experience or Training
Valid Illinois Certificate-General Administrative or PEL (Principal Endorsement)
Five years successful teaching experience

Desired Experience or Training
Experience teaching at the secondary level
Evidence of completion of post-graduate level courses in school law, supervision, administration and/or counseling

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITES
  • Maintain a safe and orderly environment by taking responsibility for the supervision of the entire campus including but not limited to classrooms, hallways, lockers, cafeteria, parking and traffic areas, and busses.Schedule, evaluate, and assist in the hiring of security personnel in conjunction with the assistant principal and security manager to whom they reportAssess and process discipline referrals from teachers and staff, including cafeteria staff and bus drivers, for the purpose of determining the appropriate response relative to the severity of the infraction.Administer the student attendance policy to ensure that all students comply with expectations for their regular attendance in all of their classesMaintain accurate and current student attendance and discipline records. Information may be conveyed in the traditional formats and also include suspension hearings, re-entry conferences, expulsion hearings. The dean should make reports on information such as truant alternative programs, referral and suspension statistics, and incident/expulsion reports.Assist in maintaining systems for the proper identification of students and visitors to campus such as student ID's, parking permits, gold cards and visitor check-in process for the purpose of protecting the safety of the school communityThe dean will participate in conducting of necessary disaster drills to practice the correct response to various events for the purpose of protecting the safety of the school communityParticipate as a member of the Administrative Cabinet by attending and taking an active role in all meetings and, when appropriate, assuming a leadership roleThe dean will assist in the development and implementation of programs to improve student attendance and behavior, providing suggestions to the Administrative TeamDeans will represent the department in committees related to school improvement (such as PBIS, Restorative Practices, Leadership Development, administrative Team meetings, assisting with organization of student and staff parking and coordinating detention supervision.Evidence of systematic planning and careful attention to detailDemonstrates skill as an inspiring, motivating, and effective disciplinarianDemonstrates cognitive behaviors consistent with the needs of individual and groups of students including clarity, use of structuring comments, proper questioning techniques, task-oriented behaviors that remediate student conflicts, enthusiasm, use of praise, the ability to probe effectively and the ability to accept the ideas of othersUnderstands school rules, state and federal legal requirements related to the discipline of studentsConsistently enforce the rules and regulations of Proviso Township High Schools District 209 while encouraging students and staff to do the sameTo be visible to students and staff, inside and outside the buildings; e.g., being in the hallways during passing periods and in the cafeteria during lunch periodsProcess attendance and behavior referrals in a timely manner, including parent/guardian conferencesInform the supervisor of all significant incidents and communicate with counselors, social workers and other pupil personnel services team members appropriatelyTo supervise student parking, Blended Learning Centers, and after-school detentions including the application process and distribution of parking stickers, appropriate announcements and notices, review of school guidelines for students attending afterschool, student transportation and delinquency issues.Assists in the investigation and resolution of student discipline issuesAssists with the administration of school district student behavior guidelines for campus security.Assesses the performance of students on a regular basis and reports individual student progress to the supervisor.Communicates appropriate student attendance information to counselors, attendance clerks including truancies, class cuts, unexcused absences and potential dropouts.Assists with preparation of the department budget, and student registration.Assists teachers set and encourages students to maintain appropriate standards of behavior with respect to others.Attend Board meetings when disciplinary reviews/hearings take placeArrange appropriate interventions affecting students' academic achievement and/or social/emotional progress in accordance with the District's Response to Intervention Plan.Articulate with feeder districts on efforts related to district student services programming.Understand, articulate and coordinate compliance with all Board of Education policies and procedures including federal, state and local policies.Coordinate and lead meetings with Student Services (Social Worker, Psychologist, Special Education Department Chair, Deans and School Counselors)Log all disciplinary actions, including parent contact and Student Services meetings throughout the school year in a prompt manner.Other duties assigned by the Principal or Principal's designee

OTHER FUNCTIONS
  • Deans will provide supervision at all home varsity football games, crosstown football (regardless of location), homecoming dance, winter dance, prom, and commencement and related activities.Additional supervision opportunities may be assigned as needed by the Principal or DesigneeDeans will participate in the District Administrators Professional Development and C teamWhen necessary, Deans will also attend department meetings as a liaison between the academic departments and the dean's office
