  • JOB TITLE: School Counselor
    LOCATION: Sheridan High School
    WORK YEAR: 190 work days
    WORK STATUS: Licensed Full Time, Exempt
    REPORTS TO: School Principal

    This position is for the 19/20 school year and is probationary unless the selected candidate is hired after the first student day. Per Master Agreement, when a position is filled after the opening of school by an individual who was not employed by the District in the previous school year, that employee will receive a one-year temporary contract.

    POSITION SUMMARY:
    The School counselor will provide support and advising services to assist Sheridan secondary students with college access, career planning and/or career awareness activities. This position works predominantly with the college readiness team at their own school, but will also coordinate bridging efforts between the middle and high school for post secondary readiness with supplemental support to additional schools. They will work to collaborate and align with school administrators, school counselors, college personnel, and members of community organizations. The Counselor will also work with students and post secondary readiness teams to develop ICAPs for students. Support will include trainings throughout the year, a college-access curriculum, and multiple mentors across the district.

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
    • Supports students in college and career advisement and programming.
    • Works with behavior and mental health team to develop systems to help students with social emotional supports to promote academics.
    • Works with leadership team to develop systems that balance student academic success strategies with social emotional support strategies
    • Educates students and parents about careers and colleges, the college admissions process, trends, procedures, and testing; and helps students and families aspire realistically and choose wisely.
    • Meets with students, individually and in groups, to talk about process and individual college/career choices.
    • Provides information about various types of financial aid and scholarships, and provides assistance with the completion of applications for financial aid.
    • Utilizes the ICAP and support systems to automate a series of touch points to remind students of important tasks.
    • Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with coworkers, students, and partners.
    • Supports and promotes other post-secondary initiatives within the school.
    • Supports post-secondary office tasks and data entry.
    • Other duties as assigned.

    POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

    Education and Experience
    • Master's degree in school based counseling
    • United States driver's license and reliable transportation to travel between schools during the work day
    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, strong organizational ability and the ability to meet deadlines.
    • Bilingual Spanish preferred but not required.
    Knowledge and other Qualifications
    • Demonstrate ability to respond effectively to the needs of a diverse student population.
    • Interest in working in a small, urban school district.
    • Ability to assist students in completing necessary tasks in a manner which empowers them to advocate for themselves in the future.
    • Knowledge of colleges, their academic programs, admission policies, and financial policies and procedures.
    • Knowledge and implementation of ASCA Model and mindset
    • Knowledge of college preparatory programs for high school students.
    • Understanding of social emotional supports and curriculum.
    • Comfortable with Microsoft Office, internet research, and Windows and Mac operating systems.
    • Ability to lift and carry 20lbs

    ESSENTIAL PHYSCIAL REQUIREMENTS:
    This job is performed in generally a clean and healthy environment. The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions required the following physical demands: some lifting, carrying, pushing and or pulling and significant finger dexterity. Generally the job requires sitting, walking, standing and the ability to travel between and amongst various buildings in the district.

    CLEARANCE:
    Must clear online background check and FBI Fingerprint check through Colorado Bureau of Investigation.

    SALARY:
    Placement on Licensed Teacher salary schedule based upon previous teaching experience and highest degree and college credits earned after student teaching was completed. Current Board approved Licensed Teacher Salary Schedule, Salary Placement Policy, and Master Agreement are available for review on our district website at www.ssd2.org . Highest initial step placement on the Licensed Salary Schedule is Step 9.

    The annual salary for this position will be determined by number of hours scheduled to work each day and number of days scheduled to work each year. The computed annual salary will be spread out in equal payments over 12 months. Sheridan School District employees are paid once a month on the 1st working day of the month that is not a weekend day or holiday.

    BENEFITS:
    Employees who are scheduled to work 30 or more hours per week are eligible to obtain district health benefits which include medical, dental, vision, life and disability insurance and supplemental benefits. Positions that qualify for health benefits also qualify for leave which could include vacation and daily leave to be determined by the position and number of days assigned. Sheridan School District No. 2 is a public employer and participates in the Colorado Public Employees' Retirement Association (PERA). All employees are required by state statute to contribute 8% of salary on a pre-tax basis to PERA through 6/30/2019. Effective 7/1/2019, employees will be required by state statute to contribute 8.75% of salary on a pre-tax basis to PERA. The District contributes 20.15% in addition to employee contribution through 6/30/2019 and will contribute 20.4% after 7/1/2019.
