Career Center Specialist

Hours: 8 hours per day
Contract Status: Regular/Probationary

FLSA Status: Classified-Non-exempt
Hourly Rate: $16.31 per hour

Purpose: The Career Center Specialist exercises independent judgment to manage a school program which includes planning, organizing, coordinating, implementing, and evaluating services associated with the high school's career development program.

Essential Duties and Responsiblities:
  • Exercises independent judgment to manage daily operations of the Career Center in a manner consistent with administrative direction, district policies, procedures, and district goals.In coordination with school counseling staff, guides college planning for high school students providing specific information regarding college selection, entrance requirements and placement, admission, and applications to students, parents, and staff.Under general direction of the administrator, coordinates the scheduling of events involving career and college selection and guidance such as symposiums, speakers, and conferences in order to provide students with accurate, up-to-date knowledge of options available.Leads the work of others, as assigned, in a manner that promotes team development and effective work. Recruits, trains, supervises, and schedules parent and community volunteers.Collaborates with school departments to organize financial aid night for students and parents, providing information about financial aid applications and packages, loans, and scholarships, and general information about financial planning for college.Plans and organizes annual awards night ceremony for graduating seniors, working with sponsors, staff, and administrators.Assists with building/program communications, both oral and written, in a manner that supports effective decision making and facilitates the work of other staff, including dispensing career and college information to counselors, students, and parents.Maintains, stores, and retrieves information in a timely, accurate, and efficient manner using standard and proprietary office systems, equipment, and software, in relation to student scholarship applications, college selection, vocational guidance, and career search.Plans and organizes administration of placement examinations (e.g., AP, SAT, PSAT).Assists with development and implementation of building/program budgets and small grants in accordance with standards set by district policy and the law.Interprets policy and procedures, within district guidelines, for staff, students, parents, and others, in a timely and accurate manner.Supervises students outside the classroom, as assigned, to support the district's discipline and instructional programs.Performs minor medical and health procedures as requested in a manner which meets state and district guidelines.Provides other related services as assigned.

  • Ability to understand and explain the building/program's instructional goals and carry out work assignments in a manner that supports those goals.Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.Mastery of office equipment and technology.Ability to interact effectively and collaboratively with individuals and groups of all ages, which requires use of conflict resolution skills.Ability to develop program budgets and provide oversight of expenditures within an established budget.Ability to facilitate group activities/meetings.Ability to independently plan, organize, and carry out work assignments, and to plan and direct the work of assigned staff or students.Ability to understand and implement the school/program's student discipline policy and to manage student behavior effectively outside a classroom setting.Ability to effectively perform multiple, simultaneous tasks with numerous interruptions.Ability to obtain specialized training as required.Ability to travel among district facilities as needed; if driving, the ability to meet district driving standards.Standard First Aid certification, or the ability to obtain certification within two months of hire, may be required.
