ORGANIZATION

The mission of Citizens of the World Los Angeles (CWC LA) is to provide a socio-economically, culturally, and racially diverse community of students in Los Angeles with an intellectually challenging, experiential learning environment that develops each student's confidence, potential, and individual sense of responsibility in the world. CWC schools promote academic rigor through a constructivist, project-based learning approach, to support and develop children’s natural intellectual curiosity. The CWC LA network has a strong track record of high academic achievement, is growing at a rapid rate, and currently enrolls nearly 2,000 students in three high-performing schools.

CWC Mar Vista, which opened in 2013 and currently serves nearly 700 students in TK-7th grade, will grow to 8th grade next year, and will ultimately serve more than 1,000 students. The school currently ranks in the top 9% in terms of academic performance out of all 773 K-8th grade LAUSD, charter, and magnet schools.

CWC’s core values are embraced by the entire community:

  • Excellence: we demand lasting quality
  • Diversity: we are better and stronger because of our differences
  • Authenticity: we are our true selves in this work, and we are candid
  • Community: we care deeply about people. We share and build partnerships. We celebrate, laugh, and seek joy, even in the tough times
  • Change: we welcome the unknown, embracing the unexpected and new. We adapt to meet the ever-changing times. We find new ways.

Company

We believe equity isn’t a box to check. It’s a daily action. We exist to empower social impact organizations to recognize and overcome unconscious bias, racism and sexism so they can build a workforce that reflects and strengthens the communities they serve.

We look at the data, ask the tough questions and—when we need to—disrupt the status quo. We’ve learned that real change can’t come from relying on the same systems and “best practices” that got us here in the first place. Our clients want to live up to their values, but it’s not always easy to know where to start. They need a trusted guide to get there. We walk them through an equity-driven process focused on finding, hiring and retaining exceptional leaders, developing transparent compensation programs, and building inclusive environments where employees thrive. This is the new standard. And we challenge everyone to meet us here.
