The position 

AKES has identified upgrading of Mathematics subject curricula and the strengthening of Mathematics teaching across AKES schools globally as a key priority. In line with this goal, AKES in Tajikistan and Kyrgyz Republic is seeking to undertake a major initiative to improve Mathematics by setting its pre-tertiary curricular standards and targets for learning outcomes to be more challenging than current national requirements, in order to prepare its graduates for admissions into the University of Central Asia and other regional and internationally recognized high quality tertiary institutions.

To achieve this objective, AKES is seeking a Mathematics Subject Consultant to be based in Khorog, Tajikistan on a one year contract, with the possibility of further extension. The assignment, starting in the fall of 2019, will focus on the two AKES Schools in Central Asia, namely, the Aga Khan Lycee, Khorog, Tajikistan and the Aga Khan School, Osh, Kyrgyzstan.

Specific outcomes include:
 

  • Pre-tertiary curricular standards and targets for learning outcomes in mathematics based on the learning outcomes specified within an existing highly regarded curriculum.
  • A comprehensive upgrading strategy to meet the Mathematics curricula standards and targets identified above, for its two schools and non-formal tutorial assistance programmes.
  • An internationally benchmarked assessment and training strategy for Mathematics teachers. 

The Consultant’s key responsibilities will include the following:

  • In collaboration with global colleagues, set pre-tertiary curricular standards and targets (eg Ontario or Alberta K-12 curriculum, IB Diploma, AP, US Common Core, UCA's entry requirements) for learning outcomes in Mathematics.
  • Use agreed benchmarks for Mathematics curricula, identify curricular gaps between National curriculum standards in the Kyrgyz Republic and Tajikistan.
  • Undertake a curriculum mapping exercise and through backwards integration, develop clear Mathematics subject expectations and standards (knowledge and skills competencies, including attitudes), for all grade levels, prioritizing the final two years of high school.
  • Based on these agreed AKES Mathematics subject expectations and standards, produce  draft syllabi outlines with suggested pedagogy and student assessment (including the use of digital platforms) consistent with the expectations for all grades, beginning with higher secondary grades.
  • Define standards of achievement in Mathematics for teachers informed by international benchmarks (eg. teachers of secondary Mathematics will require a higher level of proficiency than primary Mathematics teachers).
  • Develop and initiate a baseline assessment for teacher content knowledge and practice, based on the agreed international benchmarks for student and teacher standards in Mathematics, to inform teacher in-service professional learning.
  • Support the development of in-service professional learning around the newly developed Mathematics subject curricular standards, teacher competency gaps, practices which promote critical thinking and application of concepts in everyday life in collaboration with partners, and including online platforms.
  • Mentor Mathematics subject teachers by encouraging the use of innovative approaches, techniques or newly researched concepts, supporting with Unit/lesson planning, lesson observation and follow-up, and model excellent practice through demonstration lessons.
  • Establish and sustain a cadre of high quality Mathematics teachers within AKES Central Asia, to deliver professional development programs in-house, and externally for teachers of public institutions.

Requirements         

The Consultant should have the following qualifications, experience and attributes:

  • Bachelor or Master's degree in a Mathematics related field with a specialization in curriculum studies
  • Mathematics teaching qualification and experience, preferably at the secondary / high school level, with evidence of integrating 21st century learning and teaching skills, including the use of instructional technology
  • Experience with curriculum mapping, development and assessment, delivering professional development workshops, and supporting adult learning
  • Ability to motivate and work collaboratively within a team face to face and virtually
  • Ability and willingness to travel within Central Asia
  • Experience of working with AKDN and high-performing school boards/districts/schools would be an asset.
