About Summer Enrichment Program

The Schenectady City School District Summer Enrichment Program serves students from across our district in grades K-6. The Summer Enrichment Program is meant to prevent summer slide, while continuing to inspire students love of learning. It is a 4-week program, running from 8am - 6pm, Monday-Friday in 4 of our elementary schools. Students are engaged in various learning experiences, both academic and social, in and out of school field trips, as well as swimming lessons and community style meals. The Summer Enrichment program is looking for dynamic Social Workers.

Social Worker Expectations

Assist Site Leader and Staff to ensure all practices are informed by students lived experiences, while also assisting in the integration of Trauma Sensitive Practices into work with students, use of sensory/calm spaces, mindfulness activities, MindUp Curriculum, Restorative Practices including restorative circles and mediation

Assist General Classroom Teachers with:

integrating Trauma Sensitive Practices into work with students, use of sensory/calm spaces, mindfulness activities, MindUp Curriculum, Restorative Practices including restorative circles and mediation.

development of classroom management and individual behavior management strategies

Focus on integrating positive social-emotional learning and skill development throughout all aspects of the Summer Enrichment Program, specifically supporting implementation of Lit Camp's 7 Strengths (Belonging, Friendship, Kindness, Curiosity, Confidence, Courage, and Hope)

Work with students to develop positive peer relationships, coping skills and problem solving abilities

Be available during playground (recess) time, lunch and any other large group social activities to provide support and model social skills

Be aware of and follow student's Behavior Intervention Plans and Individual Crisis Management Plans as needed

Provide staff with essential information to better understand factors (cultural, societal, economic, familial, health, etc.) affecting a student's performance and behavior

Look at discipline data (through Infinite Campus) for students in summer program. For those who have had significant behavioral patterns throughout school year focus on teaching coping skills, pro-social skills, peer relationships, adult relationships, etc.

Provide support/counseling to any student who may be in crisis or is in need of emotional and behavioral support

Provide ongoing communication and collaboration as needed with outside providers involved with students

Provide linkages to community providers for students and family in need (Behavioral Health Center, Ellis Crisis, Crisis Prevention Team, etc.)

Provide ongoing communication with parents regarding student and family needs

Key Qualities of Social Worker

Ability to maintain high levels of energy and enthusiasm for prolonged periods throughout the day

Ability to have fun while engaging students at high cognitive levels

Motivate students to develop genuine student inquiry and natural curiosity as a balance to academic skills

Recognition of trauma's impact on the brain and how to support and be responsive to all learners

Innovative, creative thinker with a willingness to learn alongside students

Understanding of child development in order to provide protective factors for success

Organizes and manages time so as to maximize student engagement and learning

Appreciation of all cultures and experiences and an understanding of how to bring these differences into the classroom to serve as strengths

Willingness to advocate for students when issues of equity emerge

Communicates in a positive and proactive manner

Be flexible in their thinking, planning and day to day work

Problem solve independently as needed

Engage students in learning experiences that assist in preventing summer slide in literacy

Implement, with fidelity, the Lit Camp Program

Support students social emotional learning

Creatively support students in growing social skills (solving problems, approaching complex tasks, working collaboratively with peers, resolving friendship struggles, etc.)

Build upon community and family partnerships by ensuring smooth and supportive transitions, and aligned classroom activities leading to equitable outcomes

Inspire student curiosity, build background knowledge, and increase students confidence

Develop positive relationships with students, families and colleagues

Approach every summer enrichment experience with a culturally responsive lens
