POSITION SUMMARY: Under the supervision of the teacher, works in a special education classroom assisting teaching staff in a variety of instructional activities. Assists teachers in special education classrooms in providing individual and group functional living and academic skills, behavioral management support, as well as attendant services to students with various mental and/or physical disabilities. Assists students performing personal hygiene functions, e.g., toileting, diapering (as needed). Performs related work as required.
The Program- Special Education class requires additional intensive training beyond what is necessary for a Paraprofessional in the areas of student data collection, communication strategies, severe behaviors, and positive behavior management for Autism Spectrum Disorders, Cognitive Disabilities or Behavioral Disorders. Additionally, the Program Paraprofessional independently prepares materials; implements behaviorally based instruction; develops lesson outlines and detailed computer generated instructional materials; conducts screenings; independently provides vocational training in the community on a daily basis; independently prepares graphs, charts, and behavioral analysis data; actively participates in student IEP 's; possesses in-depth knowledge in communication; and extensively modifies and adapts the general education curriculum
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

- Assists students with mental, physical, or behavioral disabilities in boarding and de-boarding buses before and after school.
- Assists students in reaching proper location in school; accompanies students into general education classrooms; provides attendant services (diapering, washing faces, etc.) to students as needed.
- Teaches proper health and hygiene habits; performs delegated procedures such as clean intermittent catheterization, provides emergency and first aid care as necessary.
- Moves students weighing 50-80 pounds, daily and repetitively.
- Follows proper safety procedures.
- Prepares and helps feed students as needed.
- Instructs students in functional life skills.
- Realizes individual needs of mentally and physically challenged students and modifies general education classroom assignments occasionally
- Follows behavior plans as outlined in student's IEP 's.
- Uses positive behavior management techniques.
- Assists with lesson assignments.
- Reinforces learning concepts to students.
- Maintains discipline and order on the playground, lunchroom, library and classrooms.
- Accompanies students on field trips.
- Arranges and adjusts wheelchairs, oxygen hoses and other equipment as needed.
- Confers on occasion with special education teachers about concerns and/or observations of students.
- Assists in maintaining bulletin boards in the classroom.
- Assists in the operation of classroom equipment or student's assistive technology devices.
- Occasionally assists in recording student progress towards goals and developing instructional materials, preparing graphs and charts.
- May assist in modification of the general education curriculum.
- Participate in district training programs when requested.
- May assist occasionally in recording student progress toward goals.
- May be trained in non-violent intervention procedures for occasional use.
- Performs and participates in other related duties as assigned by the building administrator or designee.
ACCOUNTABILITES: Works under the direct supervision of a licensed teacher and is evaluated by the site administration in utilizing teacher input.
POSITION EXPECTATIONS:
Knowledge of: Educational principles and techniques; student behavior and characteristics; basic discipline and positive behavior modification techniques; correct English usage, spelling, grammar and punctuation; basic mathematics; current office methods and procedures including filing and records management; common office equipment and its usage; and some knowledge in communication and behavioral strategies.
Skill at: Securing and maintaining the confidence and cooperation of students; dealing tactfully with students, parents and school personnel; evaluating situations accurately and taking effective action; basic typing/computer skills; spelling correctly; reading, writing and speaking English at a level required for successful job performance; preparing and maintaining accurate and complete records, files and summaries; organizing and distributing instructional materials; making mathematical computations; operating various office equipment; operating and maintaining audio-visual equipment; learning basic operations of communication devices; lifting using appropriate techniques; understanding and carrying out oral and written instructions; using positive behavioral reinforcements; establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work; and moving students weighing as much as 50-80 pounds, daily and repetitively.
POSITION REQUIREMENTS: Education and Training:
- Meet highly qualified standards cited under State and Federal regulation, which are:
- AA degree or higher; OR
- 48 post-secondary credits; OR
- Successful passing score on state required paraprofessional assessment.
- High school diploma or GED equivalent.
- Valid driver's license and DMV clearance.
Licenses and Certifications: Must have the ability to complete:
- Specialized training as needed to meet student needs as outlined in IEP's.
- Current Handle with Care, First Aid, and CPR Training.
- Blood borne Pathogen and Universal Precaution Training

PHYSICAL AND MENTAL REQUIREMENTS:

Strength, dexterity, coordination, and vision to use keyboard and video display terminal for prolonged periods. Strength and stamina to bend, stoop, sit, and stand for long periods of time. Dexterity and coordination to handle files and single pieces of paper; occasional lifting of files, stacks of paper or reports, references, student work, and other materials. Some reaching for items above and below waist and head level. Some reaching, bending, squatting, and stooping to assist students access files, student work, and other items is necessary. The manual dexterity and cognitive ability to operate a personal computer and other educational technology (LCD projector, SmartBoard, iPads/Tablets, augmentative communication devices, etc.) to enhance student learning. Involves hearing and speech to communicate in person or over the telephone. Must have the ability to lift 50 pounds or 1/3 body weight, whichever is greater, to waist height, perform a 2 to 3 person lift, and the ability to restrain student(s) as needed and in accordance with state regulations.

WORKING CONDITIONS:
Work is performed under the following conditions:
Exposure to climate controlled classroom settings to outside weather with temperatures ranging from mild/moderate to extreme cold/heat. May involve exposure to noise levels ranging from moderate to very loud on occasional to frequent time periods. May involve work in crowded environments. May involve frequent to moderate lifting and other physical demands.
Hazards: Stress, anxiety, verbal and physical aggression. Classroom furniture, playground/office equipment, blood borne pathogens, communicable diseases, chemicals (as related to specific assignment), and power/hand operated equipment and machinery (as related to specific assignment).
