For the 2019-20 school year, we will employ approximately 50 staff members and serve approximately 500 students in grades 4-11, adding grade 12 the following year. 
 
ABOUT THE POSITION
Paul Bambrick-Santoyo writes about the seven levers of leadership (planning, observation and feedback, data-driven instruction, professional development, student culture, staff culture and leading adult teams). As the only network-wide staff member who is exclusively academically focused in our small network of schools (with one middle school and one high school in SY19-20), the Managing Director of Academics would be deeply engaged in working with the Chief Executive and Academic Officer and the Principals to ensure we are reaching our mission of 100% of our scholars being able to succeed in the college of their choice, strengthen their communities and change the world.
  The Managing Director of Academics would spend the most time working with the levers of data-driven instruction, planning, observation/feedback, professional development and student culture, and most work would involve codifying and systematizing existing best practices, working with others on critical instructional initiatives and creating clear, transparent systems to monitor efficacy and work to close gaps.
  For example, some key responsibilities in the first year of this role are:
  • Leading the creation of interim assessments for grades 4-11 for history, science and electives
  • Streamlining our data-driven instructional practices with easy-to-ready dashboards, progress monitoring and reteaching plans and tracking
  • Managing the interim assessment process, ensuring that assessments are administered effectively, graded efficiently, teachers have data in hand and quickly participate in effective data meetings after doing thoughtful analysis, and have effective and tight re-teaches happening to ensure student mastery at a high level
  • Leading teams of teacher-leaders in the building and honing their own content expertise
  • Leading a team reviewing curricula to determine any curricular changes that may be necessary to help us reach our mission of 100% of students going to and through college
  • Systematizing professional development and ensure it is high quality, impactful in classrooms and drives results in achievement
  • Managing systems to ensure that lesson plans are turned in and internalized to the level needed to ensure student learning
  • Participating in regular school culture audits and work closely with principals on driving cultural improvements forward to aid rigor and instruction
  • Working closely with principals to ensure strong development of teachers at varying levels of proficiency
  • Codification and systematizing of select elements of student culture including Pride Time/community circle scope and sequences, lessons and ways to build culture proactively
  • Serving as a network leader and thought partner to the Chief Executive and Academic Officer
  • Managing instructional programs at the network level to ensure that instructional time is maximized and students are achieving

  • Fluency in the common core standards and college-ready assessments (particularly MAP, PSAT/SAT and PARCC)
  • Unwavering belief in our mission and experience working with urban and/or low-income communities.
