  • POSITION TITLE: Anticipated Position -- STEM Middle School Classroom Teacher

    LOCATION: BCPS STEM Middle School at BCCHS

    SALARY: Compensation follows the current contractual teacher salary schedule


    SUMMARY

    The BCPS STEM Middle School is a new 6 - 8 grade magnet school scheduled to open in the fall of 2019. The implementation is planned to begin with 6th grade, then phase in 7th and 8th grades in subsequent school years.

    Our classroom instruction will focus on evidence-based best practices grounded in inquiry-based learning and cross-curricular STEM instruction designed to produce a rigorous and student-engaged learning experience for all students. Teachers will work across content, across grade levels, and across the building in the design and delivery of instruction.

    Teachers selected for these projected vacancies will be expected to participate in program implementation activities within the 2018-2019 school year.

    ANTICIPATED START DATES

    Implementation and Curriculum Work: Winter 2018

  • Work with a design team of instructional experts to create 6th grade curriculum of thematic units of project-based STEM learning. Design integrated, standards aligned curriculum that meets district and state level requirements. Provide content input and expertise in area(s) of certification.
  • Engage in ongoing professional development for both the design and execution of 6th grade curriculum design and delivery. Provide support, insight of experiences, and direction to 7th grade instructional team for subsequent year implementation of 7th grade.

  • MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES

    Recognizing the program will evolve as the new school implementation unfolds, members of the STEM Instructional team will be expected to:
  • Implement culturally responsive, rigorous tier-I instruction as evidenced by implementation of the Battle Creek Way.
  • Use trauma-sensitive practices and equity-centered inquiry to create classrooms where students want to be.
  • Promote problem solving, critical thinking, and inquiry-based approaches to learning.
  • Plan and manage the development of standards-based curriculum, instruction, assessment plans and strategies through collaboration in the development and implementation of integrated STEM project-based program curricula.
  • Assess the accomplishments of students on a regular basis, provide progress reports as required and communicate with parents as deemed necessary.
  • Exercise a positive, team-oriented approach to work using excellent communication skills.
  • Participate in additional professional learning specific to the needs of the STEM program.
  • Effectively implement classroom management strategies based upon the restorative practices model, and aligned with our STEM model of instruction.
  • Integrate technology into instruction and student learning experiences to enhance STEM learning outcomes.
  • Develop and deliver innovative, STEM connected elective course curriculum.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of school improvement planning designed to improve student achievement and success.
  • Plan, implement, and participate in program, family, and community related activities.
  • Serve on building and district committees, included but not limited to the STEM implementation team.
  • Actively pursue leadership roles in the school and promote leadership opportunities in the classroom
  • Maintain records for such things as student attendance, evaluations, report cards, discipline records and documents required by the School Board or Board of Education using prescribed formats.
  • Practice high impact professionalism in all work and relations with others.
  • Other duties or responsibilities as assigned.


  • REQUIRED PROFESSIONAL PREPARATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE
  • Valid Michigan teaching certificate with endorsement in teaching area or approval of the Michigan Department of Education
  • Secondary Teaching Certificate with DI/DX and EX endorsements, Secondary DI/DX and BX or Self-contained K-8 Classroom Certified with DI endorsement; endorsements must be a minimum of 6-8 grade
  • Bachelor"s degree


  • PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Expertise in STEM focused, project-based learning experiences using integrated approaches that use an engineering analysis lens
  • Additional Computer Science and/or Technology instructional certification or industry expertise
  • Additional non-core elective certifications or expert permits
  • Graduate Level Coursework in area(s) of Education or STEM related discipline
  • Minimum of 5 years of classroom experience
  • Mentor/Leadership experience with teachers new to the profession


  • ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS:
  • Reports to the building principal
  • Supervises students enrolled in his/her classes as assigned by the building principal, aides, volunteers who have been assigned to his/her instructional area of responsibility.
