  • JOB TITLE: Special Education Teacher (Mild/Moderate)
    LOCATION: Fort Logan Northgate
    WORK YEAR: 185 work days, 7.5 hours/day, Monday - Friday
    WORK STATUS: Licensed, Full Time Exempt
    REPORTS TO: School Principal and Special Education Director

    POSITION SUMMARY:
    The Educator must be licensed in Special Education with an endorsement in Elementary or Secondary Education. In addition, the District is also seeking someone who has a background or training in teaching co-teaching. Must be trained (or willing to be trained) in Enrich IEP software.

    This position is for the 19/20 school year and is probationary unless the selected candidate is hired after the first student day. Per Master Agreement, when a position is filled after the opening of school by an individual who was not employed by the District in the previous school year, that employee will receive a one-year temporary contract.

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
    1. Provide a continuum of services with students with disabilities, including instruction in the general classroom and pull-out specialized instruction in the special education classroom.
    2. Provide materials and teaching techniques that are research-based and that will address the needs of students with disabilities.
    3. Assist the administration at their request in any matter that may command priority and bring to their attention issues of concern regarding special education services and programs to increase efficiency and effectiveness.
    4. Maintain the confidentiality of school district record files, conversations and meetings that have not become a part of the public record.
    5. Communicate with the immediate supervisor in a direct and open fashion to facilitate the finding of solutions to school district and interpersonal problems and misunderstandings.
    6. Provide a responsible diagnostic and prescriptive program for children in alignment with special education law and Multi-Tiered System of Supports.
    7. Assess and evaluate students who are referred for possible special education services in order to determine eligibility and pinpoint strengths and weaknesses in learning styles and academic achievement.
    8. Work in an instructional capacity individually or in small group with students assigned to a special education program.
    9. Consult with parents and assist them in understanding their child's learning needs.
    10. Provide consultation services to the classroom teacher and other related service team members in areas of student need.
    11. Act as a team member, attending meetings and staffings designed to meet the needs of students with disabilities.
    12. Act as an advocate in an advisory capacity for meeting the needs of children with educational disabilities in the community and at parent group meetings.
    13. Supervise the work of the assistant and volunteers assigned to the program.
    14. Provide in-service and workshops for teachers and staff during the school year.
    15. Evaluate the progress of students.
    16. Complete all necessary forms and records as required by Clear Creek School District and the Colorado Department of Education.
    17. Participate in workshops for professional growth.
    18. Perform other duties as may be assigned by the building principal or Special Education Director in accordance with district policies.

    SUPERVISORY DUTIES:
    None

    POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
    1. The Special Education Teacher shall hold a valid Colorado license with approved endorsement as a teacher of the category of handicap being taught.
    2. Bachelor's degree or higher required from an accredited university or college.
    3. Completed a state approved Teacher Preparation Program, participation in a Teacher in Resident Program or participation in an Alternative Teacher License program.
    4. Demonstrates competency by one of the following means:
      • Pass the Place or Praxis test.
      • Pass the Veteran Teacher HOUSSE, held a license on or before July 1, 2006 and has had one or more years of completed teaching experience.

    GENERAL EXPECTATIONS:
    • Demonstrate knowledge and skill regarding the components of effective instruction.
    • Demonstrate knowledge of content and teaching methods in areas of the teaching assignment.
    • Demonstrate knowledge of developmental needs of students.
    • Demonstrate effective written and oral communication skills.
    • Evidence of ability to establish and maintain effective, cooperative relationships with school personnel, students and parents.
    • Demonstrate understanding and empathy necessary for working with students

    ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
    The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions required the following physical demands: some lifting up to 50 pounds, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling: and signification fine finger dexterity. Generally the job requires sitting, walking, and standing. This job is performed in generally a clean and healthy environment.

    CLEARANCES:
    Must clear background check through the CBI and the FBI through Fingerprint submission.

    SALARY:
    Placement on Licensed Salary Schedule based upon previous teaching experience and highest degree and college credits earned after student teaching was completed. Current Board approved Licensed Teacher Salary Schedule, Salary Placement Policy, and Master Agreement are available for review on our district website at www.ssd2.org . Highest initial step placement on the Licensed Salary Schedule is Step 9.

    BENEFITS:
    Employees who are scheduled to work 30 or more hours per week in the 2019/2020 school year are eligible to obtain district health benefits which include medical, dental, vision, life and disability insurance and supplemental benefits. Positions that qualify for health benefits also qualify for leave which could include vacation and daily leave to be determined by the position and number of days assigned. Sheridan School District No. 2 is a public employer and participates in the Colorado Public Employees' Retirement Association (PERA). All employees are required by state statute to contribute 8% of salary on a pre-tax basis to PERA through 6/30/2019. Effective 7/1/2019, employees will be required by state statute to contribute 8.75% of salary on a pre-tax basis to PERA. The District contributes 20.15% in addition to employee contribution through 6/30/2019 and will contribute 20.4% after 7/1/2019.
