BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

High school diploma or general education (GED) with college level courses in training, business administration, or related area; five years of experience in transportation related work with previous supervisory experience desirable; or any combination of experience and training that would provide the following knowledge, abilities, and skills:
Thorough knowledge of federal, state, School Division, and Office of Transportation policies, practices, and procedures of student transportation.
Previously worked in the areas of bus routing and scheduling; supervising and evaluating bus drivers; or coordinating the daily planning and operation of transportation services.
Considerable knowledge of office procedures as well as applicable computer software and equipment.
Experience with the principles and procedures of traffic accident investigation or the willingness to learn.
Ability to plan, organize, analyze, coordinate, supervise, and assess the safe and efficient operation of the Bus Operations Section including planning bus routes, scheduling, and training subordinate personnel.
Ability to establish effective working relationships with subordinates, peers, and school staff members.
Knowledge of customer service techniques/procedures and ability to serve as an interface with school administrators, parents, and the general public.
Excellent human relations skills; ability to communicate effectively, in writing and orally.
Possess a Virginia Driver's License; a Commercial Driver's License (Class B) with P & S endorsements is preferred.

The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 15 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, and the ability to adjust focus.

BASIC FUNCTION/NATURE OF WORK:

This is highly skilled, managerial work. The employee plans and coordinates an assigned area of Transportation Services to assure the safe and efficient transportation of students in Prince William County Public Schools. Supervises, schedules, and assesses personnel directly in the provision of services. Responsible for the overall management of bus routes, load levels, and daily operations. Provides guidance to route managers and bus dispatchers in resolving other operational tasks. Provides leadership and supervision to subordinates within the section. Serves as the basic public relations facilitator between the Office of Transportation Services and the general public. The work is performed under the general supervision of the Supervisor of Bus Operations.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works near moving mechanical parts, works and drives in outside weather conditions, and occasionally works in high, precarious places, exposed to wet, humid, and inclement weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES/ILLUSTRATIVE EX OF WORK:

•Works collaboratively with all stakeholders in providing a World-Class Education.
•Coordinates the development of bus schedules and ensures safe travel routes and arrival at schools of destination prior to published bell schedules.
•Supervises the use and oversees the maintenance of facilities including an operations center, bus parking area, and vehicle maintenance shops.
•Provides leadership and direct supervision for 10 subordinates.
•Evaluates the performance of four to eight route managers and two to five administrative personnel through daily observation and records reviews to assure adherence to assigned duties.
•Conducts annual performance reviews with drivers and attendants.
•Ensures compliance with work schedules, safety procedures, and departmental guidelines.
•Investigates accidents of School Board owned vehicles, completes required reports, and provides necessary support involving litigation.
•Attends conferences to present pupil transportation policies and regulations and state and local laws.
•Serves as the designee-in-charge of the Bus Operations Section in the absence of the Supervisor of Bus Operations as assigned.
•Completes other duties as assigned.
