Jewish Child & Family Services (JCFS) provides vital, individualized, results-driven, therapeutic and supportive services for thousands of children, adults and families of all backgrounds each year.

The Physical Education Teacher works with children (K - 12) with emotional and behavior disorders, which may include aggressive behaviors, in a therapeutic physical education setting.  The Physical Education Teacher creates and delivers student, individualized and small group instruction within a therapeutic, highly structured, exceptional needs environment. The students attending the Therapeutic Day School have been referred from their home districts to our School to receive an individualized and intensive educational program in our supportive and therapeutic environment. The Therapeutic Day School is located in West Rogers Park, Chicago, IL.

Requirements: 

  • Must be certified by Illinois State Board of Education as a Physical Education teacher
  • Minimum of 2 years’ experience as a school physical education instructor for students with special needs population-including children with Autism, ED, BD, LD
  • Must be proficient in Microsoft Office programs
  • Must complete the physical and testing requirements for the Therapeutic Crisis Intervention (TCI) training (employer provided)

Preferred:

  • Endorsement or Certification in Special or Adapted Physical Education is a plus

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: 

  • Makes decisions within the scope of current policies and procedures. Obtains approval for deviation in procedure
  • Establish and provide classroom management skills that recognize and include consideration of the characteristics of and the methodology of the student population
  • Participates in annual professional development on effective practices for physical education
  • Effectively manage and intervene in disruptive student behavior, both verbal and physical; including use of Therapeutic Crisis Intervention (TCI) prescribed methods to de-escalate critical situations
  • Collaborates and maintains ongoing communication relationship with all members of the interdisciplinary team (social workers, teachers, TDS Administration and all other relevant JCFS staff) to achieve a social and educational benefit for the student
  • Able to be flexible and shift gears quickly based on situations or changing priorities
  • Independent with sound professional judgment and the ability to establish and maintain boundaries
  • Demonstrated ability to remain calm in high-stress situations while maintaining an understanding and supportive demeanor
  • Strong desire to work with those students who have not been able to achieve success in the public/private educational system
