This position is regular contract.


The Reading Specialist serves as both a resource to colleagues as well as an instructor of students with specific needs in correction and/or remediation of reading skills. Reading Specialists meet regularly to coordinate a K-12 Reading Intervention System that addresses challenges students face related to reading and to incorporate support for universal classroom practices (in conjunction with the instructional coaches) so all learners becoming confident readers. The Reading Specialist conducts group and individual formative reading assessments.

• Leadership abilities demonstrated within the field of reading.
• Ability to administer and interpret reading assessments and related data.
• State Certification as a Reading Specialist.
• Classroom teaching experience of at least 3 years.
• Expertise in use of technologies for resource and instruction.
• Demonstrated collaborative leadership with colleagues.
• Knowledge of best practices in reading instruction and support at the classroom level.
• Demonstrated understanding of the critical role literacy plays in repaying the educational debt owed to historically marginalized students and families.


Teaches reading skills strategies to classroom teachers for transfer into their teaching, including helping teachers develop differentiation strategies to meet the broad spectrum of reading levels during universal instruction.

Serves as a resource for administration, teachers, and families on reading and reading comprehension.

Provides individual or group instruction with a corrective or remedial focus and consults with the Advanced Learning Specialist for students with accelerated reading needs.

Evaluates levels of reading material, assessments, and software programs for teachers across content areas.

Interprets assessment data and evaluates implications for instruction/intervention.


Reading Specialist committee participant and Assessment Action Team (AAT) leader/co-leader

Select and evaluate literacy intervention methods.

Assist teachers in learning how to administer assessments, interpret assessment results, monitor student progress, and apply information to classroom instruction.

Be a resource to teachers by leading professional development workshops, modeling strategies of techniques for teachers, and conducting demonstration or collaborative lessons.

Work collaboratively with instructional coaches and teachers to implement quality literacy programming that is research-based and meets the needs of the students.

Assist in coordination of the Literacy/Reading Budget.

All other duties as assigned by building Administrator and/or the district Director.


This is a light job involving lifting or carrying up to 20 pounds occasionally. Sitting is primarily involved with walking or moving about frequently performed. Verbal and auditory communications are both frequently involved. Near acuity is also involved.
