PURPOSE OF JOB: Organizing and overseeing all district catering events, recipe/menu development, marketing of the catering program, instruction of culinary techniques to food service workers, preparation and service of meals to students, guests, and community of the KCMSD.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: include the following.

Meet expectations of customer by providing menu choices when contacted about an event.

Develop menus and recipes that meet the expectations of our customers.

Determine the labor, food, and supply cost of all menu items. Price events according to the cost of menu items, the market, customer expectations, and profitability.

Maintain fiscal responsibility by controlling labor, food, and supply costs.

Order weekly supplies based on materials on hand and forecasted production requirements.

Ensure successful operation of catering events including preparation of food, delivery, set-up, service, and clean-up.

Prepare food following standardized recipes, preparation, and serving methods.

Utilize work simplification techniques.

Exhibit knowledge of operation of all equipment in the kitchen.

Assure product is cooked and held at proper temperature for highest quality food attainable.

Load, deliver, and unload food and equipment in district van to various locations across the Kansas City School District.

Set-up catering events according to the type of event (i.e. lunch buffet, served dinner) and style (i.e. disposable, china) in a logical and eye appealing manner according to instructions. Ensure proper serving utensils are available.

Keep food and supplies stocked during service. Meet customer needs as they arise.

Clean-up catering events in a way that is not disturbing to customers.

Send information on completed events to FNS Office on a timely basis for invoicing.

Schedule, train, supervise, and direct the work of catering assistants and/or student workers.

Market the catering program and generate new business by utilizing verbal, written, and electronic communication with district personnel.

Maintain high standards of sanitation in compliance to Health Department Regulations.

Maintain high personal hygiene.

Maintain high standards of safety in the kitchen.

Report maintenance needs or equipment malfunctions to cafe manager.

Responsible for working in a courteous and cooperative manner with assistant director, café managers, coworkers, school staff, students, and customers.

Follow the policies and procedures set by the school district and the Food and Nutrition Services Department.

Assist with food production and service to insure that meals served are nutritionally adequate, meet high standards for flavor and appearance and meet all Federal requirements and District directives.

Work cooperatively with Supervisor at preparation site for accurate amounts of food to be delivered. Assist with ordering appropriate food, supplies and equipment in correct quantities for the cafeteria as scheduled.

Assist with training in the professional development of cafeteria personnel. Provide leadership in maintaining good working relationships within the cafeteria.

Follow food service menus and directives in preparing school meals. Keep accurate food production records daily as assigned. Record leftovers, store properly and utilize effectively as directed by manager.

Other duties as required or assigned.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: Serve as lead for catering activities

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Any combination of education, training, and experience equivalent to the completion of a high school diploma.

Three (3) years experience in quantity food preparation.

Ability to lift/push 150 pounds with assistance.

Must be able to work independently under limited supervision, manage multiple tasks, and work calmly and effectively under pressure.

Must be able to quickly identify problems and determine solutions.

Must have great attention to detail and commitment to quality food and service.

Must be able to continue to develop and grow a catering business.

Must be able to establish and maintain effective working relationships with all levels of school district personnel, students, parents, vendors, and the public.

Must be able to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with the FNS Manager in the kitchen where a catering food is being prepared or where an event is being served.

Must have strong verbal and written communication skills.

Must have a demonstrated knowledge of computer skills including MS Office.

Must possess the knowledge, skills, abilities, and physical attributes necessary to perform the essential functions of the position.

Must have a valid driver's license, insurable, and ability to drive a district van.

Must be able to work a flexible schedule (early mornings, late nights, weekends, summers, etc) as needed.

Must be able to be re-assigned to work in non-catering areas of the FNS Department as needed.

Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate or acceptable.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Training and certification in a Culinary Arts Program

Experience in food service management
