Research Scientist - Center for School and Student Progress

About this role...

In the Research Scientist role, you will e nhance the capabilities of the Center for School and Student Progress team to provide research support to the organization and its partner schools and educational agencies . This research team has responsibility for conducting research in collaboration with school system partners, supporting partners in the analysis and application of testing data to policy and programmatic decisions, supporting major account partners, prototyping new reporting or visualization of data, and contributing to the publication and dissemination of research studies . The research scientist will conduct and support work in one or more of these areas of focus. The position will be located in our Portland, OR. Headquarters, although consideration may be given to remote-work candidates.

Your next challenge...

  • Work with the Center to develop a plan to support NWEA's Research Agenda and development roadmap
  • Perform research with school systems to enhance the application and use of assessment data in the field.
  • Work across internal NWEA teams to design new reports and data visualizations that complement new test types and features
  • Collaborate on the development and dissemination of technical reports and documentation
  • Collaborate on the development and dissemination of published studies and peer-reviewed articles
  • Provide support to NWEA partners in the field around the application of testing data to inform policy and programmatic decisions
  • Present research findings, assessment topics, and testing related issues to a wide variety of external audiences
  • Perform research to validate the efficacy of NWEA's products and services for schools
  • Perform other duties as assigned to ensure the success of the Center and the organization

  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment with an organizational perspective.
  • Interest in collaborating on applied research in which success is measured by your contribution to organizational objectives rather than traditional academic criteria.
  • Ability to design and implement research studies in collaboration with school systems.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with measurement and statistical software (SAS, SPSS, R, Stata, or similar programs) and/or data visualization software (Tableau, Power BI).
  • Expertise in education statistics and statistical methods
  • Experience with HLM and growth modelling; expertise in this area is a plus.
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze large data sets in an efficient manner
  • Mastery of written English needed to write technical and non-technical reports and documentation
  • Ability to explain , through presentations and writing, complex measurement and statistical concepts to a wide variety of audiences, primarily teachers and school/district administrators
  • A bility to adapt research skills and approaches in a flexible and responsive manner to organizational needs.

Education and experience

  • Ph.D. in educational research, assessment, sociology, economics, or related field with prior research work focused on practical questions related to education policy, teaching and learning, and/or education assessment
  • Work experience in assessment or educational testing.
  • Experience developing practical solutions to applied education problems
  • Experience working as an educator or administrator in K-12 school systems, or as a researcher working in direct collaboration with school systems.
