    DESCRIPTION:

    Under the general direction of the school principal, the Health and Child Development Specialist develops and manages health education programs for children and families. Evaluates and monitors children to determine physical and mental development, including social, motor development, self-help, cognitive, and language skills. (PFA Expansion Grant)

    DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
    • Master's Degree in Child Development Preferred
    • Bachelor's Degree in Psychology
    • Experience working with high poverty students and families

    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

    Knowledge of:
    • Typical and atypical child development from birth through adolescence
    • Academic Interventions
    • Family support strategies

    Ability to:
    • Work cooperatively and effectively with both professional and non-professional groups
    • Encourage participation in child development and early intervention programs
    • Teach health and child development to students and parents
    • Collect and manage data related to student progress

    DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: (Essential Job Functions)
  • Develop and manage health education programs for children and families.
  • Evaluate and monitor children to determine physical and mental development, including social, motor development, self-help, cognitive and language skills.
  • Conducts groups and workshops to educate parents in the area of child development through materials and curricula developed for this purpose.
  • Provide developmental assessments of children birth through kindergarten age; teach parents ways to enhance their child's development potential.
  • Assist in the selection, preparation, and distribution of materials on child development which will further the purpose of this program.
  • Documents activities, tracks progress and formulates plans, including exercises and health activities for parents to administer.
  • Serves as a resource person for the teaching staff.
  • Interact with parents individually or in a group setting.
  • Be familiar with local social agencies, and when necessary make student referrals.
  • Refer students to those school community agencies whose specialized services are beyond the competency of the Specialist.
  • Administer and interpret tests.
  • Compile, organize, and forward test results to the central district testing office.
  • Assist in public relations by speaking to service clubs, youth groups, PTA's, church groups, etc.
  • Submit monthly report to the Building Principal.
  • Conduct year-end Survey of Services for Program evaluation.

  • WORKING CONDITIONS:
    • Inside/outside standard office and school building environment
    • Some travel within the district and professional meetings as required

    HAZARDS/UNUSUAL DEMANDS:
    • Frequent standing, sitting, walking, and lifting up to approximately 24 pounds. Possible contact with dissatisfied or angry individuals.

    Standing 0-4 hours per day 1-7 hours per day
    Walking 0-2 hours at a time 1-2 hours per day
    Sitting 0-2 hours at a time 0-5 hours per day
