Bed-Stuy New Beginnings:

Bedford Stuyvesant New Beginnings Charter School is an elementary and middle school proudly serving the students in our neighborhood in Brooklyn, affectionately known worldwide as 'Bed-Stuy'. Opened in 2010, we serve more than 670 scholars in Kindergarten - Eighth Grade through the pursuit of 21st century learning, project based & service learning, and traditional coursework strategies, students will be prepared to succeed in academically competitive schools as well as become responsible citizens of the global community.

Our Dean of Curriculum:

The Dean of Curriculum will manage the development and selection of curricula to be used by instructional staff for the purpose of education BSNBCS scholars. This process includes creation of grade and content appropriate curricula, monitoring student data to identify instructional areas in need of intervention, selection of appropriate texts and other instructional materials, strategies for incorporating technology into the classroom environment, development of the academic pacing calendar, and partnering with the Dean(s) of Instruction to implement curriculum.

A day in the life of our Dean of Curriculum:
  • Research, design and supplementation of academic curriculum for assigned grade level based on successful models and approaches.
  • Align academic curriculum with state standards, BSNBCS standards, and other scientifically-based benchmarks.
  • Write and revise unit plans for core content curricula
  • Design an integrated approach to performing arts and digital literacy (computer science).
  • Assist the Dean(s) of Instruction in the development of instructional staff in additions or changes to the curricula through robust professional development and active coaching.
  • Collaborate with Teaching and Leadership team on collecting, analyzing, and supporting school-based leaders' response to student achievement data
  • Develop cohesive strategy for vertical and horizontal curriculum alignment within and across content areas K-8.
  • Creation and maintenance of annual academic planning calendar
  • Assist the Dean with the creation and maintenance of the professional development scope and sequence for instructional staff members.
  • Monitor grade level-progress against the scope and sequence.
  • Analyze school-wide and grade level data regularly in order to assist with the design responsive student interventions
  • Track other useful academic data (e.g. homework completion rates) for use in strategic academic planning

What you need to bring to the table:

Education: Master's degree in Education required; School Building Leadership or equivalent preferred
  • Experience: Must have a measurable and proven record of teaching and/ or school leadership success in an urban District, Private or Charter School.
  • Teaching experience: Must have at least (5) years of prior successful experience teaching assigned grade level students in an urban school. If content specific, must have (5) years of successful teaching experience in that content area. Must have experience teaching multiple grade levels. Teaching experience must also be with marked success and quantifiable and objective student performance gains that surpass state averages
  • School Leadership experience: Prior experience in mentoring and coaching teachers in the school environment is preferred. Must have experience with conducting staff professional development. Diverse experience across education sector with focus on curriculum and instruction
  • Certification: Certificates as determined by the New York State Education Department (NYSED).
  • NYSED Teacher certification: Must have a valid teacher's certificate in appropriate subject and with grade specific endorsement(s) issued by the NYSED or an equivalent certification from another state. NYSED Teacher certification in appropriate grade and content areas or Students with Disabilities in appropriate grade and content areas is preferred
  • NYSED (or out of state equivalent) School Administrator or Supervisor, School District Administrator or School Building Leader, or School Building Leader certification preferred
  • Interpersonal Skills: Works well with others from diverse backgrounds. Focuses on solving conflict; maintaining confidentiality; listening to others without interrupting; keeping emotions under control; remaining open to others' ideas and contributing to building a positive team spirit. Demonstrated ability to successfully work with and developing educators in a school environment.
  • Computer Skills: General knowledge of computer usage and ability to use, e-mail, internet and word processing software, and spreadsheets including, but not limited to Google Suite applications, Microsoft Office Suite applications and Apple MacBook iOs.
  • Other Skills and Abilities: Demonstrated knowledge of child growth and development at each level of instruction and of the social, emotional, physical and cognitive development of adolescent students. Possesses knowledge of effective behavior management methods. Ability to meet timelines and exercise good judgment while working in a dynamic environment. Other skills and abilities required are:
  • A deep level of understanding of the Common Core State Standards
  • Deep CCSS-aligned content knowledge in math or ELA, K-8 experience preferred
  • Analytical problem-solver and solutions-oriented strategic thinker who overcomes difficult organizational challenges
  • Exceptional public speaker, writer and editor, especially of lesson plans, unit plans, and other curricular materials
  • Evidence of success in working with teachers
  • Evidence of strong planning and organizational skills
  • In-depth knowledge of a variety of reading and writing instructional strategies necessary to support the Common Core State Standards in all content areas
  • Ability to assist with administering and managing the operation of the school.
  • Ability to plan and supervise the work of others.
  • Evidence of establishing and maintaining effective working
    relationships with students, parents, staff, and the public.
  • Knowledge and effective skills in implementing curriculum,
    instructional practices, interpretation of test data
