We are seeking a Senior Grant Accountant with for our Finance department, who will report to the Assistant Controller. This position is seeking applicants who can not only perform the work of an accounting generalist, but one who can also oversee a subset of our grants portfolio. A part of this latter function will require close work with our Revenue Accounting Manager as well as communicating with multiple HCZ program directors, development staff, external auditors, and government agency representatives concerning grants management. He/she will maintain financial records, produce financial reports, and process related data for government grant administration, as well as ensure that the organization is in compliance with all applicable funding source guidelines.

Total funding from all government grant agencies is approximately $50 million annually. Our government grant funders include: NYC Department of Youth and Community Development (DYCD), the Administration for Children's Services (ACS), the NYC Department of Education (DOE), and the NYC Office of Children and Family Services (OCFS); however, this role may not focus on preparing deliverables and compliance for all of these funders.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Prepare financial reports and documents to support management of government and private grant funding including billing, recording and tagging revenue and expenses for each funding source, preparing compliance reports for government grants and reconciliation of grants to general ledger and upkeep the grant reporting
  • Monitor budgets and actual expenditures, and coordinate with program directors and others necessary to ensure the maximum use of contract funds,
  • Work with Revenue Accounting Manager (RAM), development staff, and program directors to prepare budget-related materials and supporting documentation required for submission with federal and/or state government grant proposals, funding renewals, budget modifications, etc. Candidates should be knowledgeable in funding requirements (e.g., allowability of costs, prior approval requirements, etc.), so that they can relay this information to development and program staff as needed.
  • Assist with annual financial audit as well as government related audits
  • Attend relevant training and stay abreast of developments in federal and state funding regulations to ensure that HCZ remains compliant with applicable guidelines
  • Prepare and journalize monthly bank account reconciliations
  • Update investment schedules and capture monthly activity in the general ledger
  • Ad hoc projects, as directed by the Controller or Assistant Controller
  • Deliver exceptional, friendly customer service by researching and resolving accounting-related inquiries in a timely and professional manner

Qualification, Skills and Knowledge Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in business; accounting or finance majors strongly preferred
  • 5+ years of work experience in accounting in a non-profit organization; experience with pre- and post-award grants management highly desirable
  • Strong understanding of GAAP, particularly for non-profits required
  • Understanding of grants management, including knowledge of regulatory guidance and compliance requirements (including Uniform Guidance - 2 CFR 200, the Office of Management and Budget Compliance Supplement, and other federal and state regulations), grant budget administration, expense spending allowability, and preparation of both financial (i.e., billing) and progress reports for funders
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to develop relationships and communicate effectively with people from a variety of educational and occupational backgrounds
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills - must be able to work effectively under pressure, handle multiple tasks/demands simultaneously, and adapt quickly to shifting priorities
  • High proficiency in Microsoft Excel and familiarity with other Microsoft Office applications required
