Description: Special Education Paraprofessionals in the Salem Public Schools assist classroom teachers and other certified school personnel in providing an innovative, high quality education programs designed to meet the unique needs of students with disabilities in the Salem Public Schools. Paraprofessionals work with school staff to create an educational program that provides students with opportunities to engage in standards-based, hands-on learning and social engagement with peers in a safe and age-appropriate environment. Paraprofessionals are expected to work as part of a collaborative team and contribute to our professional and positive school culture and climate. The job includes modeling language, providing academic support, collecting academic and social/behavioral data, providing general supervision and social-engagement opportunities, assisting with the implementation of behavioral interventions, and, depending upon students' needs, using assistive technology and assisting with personal care. The right person for this position has a positive and happy disposition, is dependable, organized, flexible, and is willing to learn through participation in professional development, hands-on experiences, reading, and workshop trainings.

Job Requirements:
  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Forty-eight (48) Credit Hours of College Coursework or an Associate's Degree, or a passing score on one of the two following Formalized Standardized Assessments: ParaPro Assessment (http://www.ets.org/parapro/) or WorkKeys
  • Minimum of two years' experience working with school aged children
  • Written and oral English proficiency required
  • Possession of high energy and patience levels
  • Fluency in Spanish advantageous
  • Citizenship, residency or work VISA in United States required


General Paraprofessional Responsibilities:
  • Read students' Individual Education Programs (IEPs), demonstrate an understanding of assigned students' profiles and learning needs, and deliver supports as outlined in the IEPs
  • Engage in related PD based on student profiles.
  • Collaborate and communicate with the Special Education teachers and service providers on an ongoing basis
  • Deliver and/or reinforce learning activities with individual or small groups of students, under the direction of teaching staff
  • Monitor and facilitate social interactions during lunch and outdoor play, supervise safe student arrival, departure routines, breakfast and lunch routines
  • Prepare materials under the direction of teaching staff
  • Assist teacher in implementing accommodations and specialized strategies for instruction, skill reinforcement, and work production
  • Assist with classroom management and supervision; administer positive behavior support programs including related data collection and discrete trials, as needed
  • Attend therapy sessions with students outside of the classroom and facilitate skill carry-over back into the classroom
  • Escort and assist students as needed throughout the building and on community-based experiences
  • Learn to facilitate the students' use of assistive technology
  • Other duties as prescribed by the Principal or PPS administrative staff, as described within the Paraprofessional contract


Position Expectations for 1:1, ECC, Life Skills, Autism Spectrum and Therapeutic Program Paraprofessionals:
  • Assist in toileting, feeding, and Activity of Daily Living (ADL) skills, as determined by student need and outlined in the IEP
  • Crisis Prevention Certification required and provided
  • Must be physically capable of, and willing to, engage in restraint, bending, lifting, and positioning as required to meet unique student needs


One to one paraprofessional must have the skills, abilities and aptitude to meet all unique needs of their assigned student.
