STIPEND OPPORTUNITY: Night School SEI Humanities Teacher/Content Based ESL Teacher

Terms: BTU Overtime Rate
Tuesday and Thursday 6:30-9:30
February 12 to June 6 (Make-up Days through June 13)

Location: Boston Public Schools Department of Adult Education, Madison Park High Technical Vocational High School, 55 Malcolm X Blvd. Near Roxbury Crossing Orange Line MBTA stop

Boston Public Schools' Department of Adult Education is looking for an ESOL teacher to join our energetic team; someone who is committed to working with our students, someone who understands the lives of urban adults and has a proven track record of successful outcomes with adult students who face academic and personal challenges.

Responsibilities
  • Instruct students using the WIDA Standards for ELLs, and appropriate English language development pedagogy and sheltered immersion methodology.
  • Plan and teach history lessons using the S.I.O.P Model of instruction and implement appropriate strategies for adult English Language Learners.
  • Model professional behavior that addresses job responsibilities, district policies and procedures, and the expectations of professionals working in a multi-lingual, multi-cultural, and economically diverse community.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to excellence, equity, and high expectations for all students with an emphasis on building on the strengths that students bring to the teaching/learning process.
  • Maintain accurate attendance and assessment records.
  • Attend all scheduled staff and PD meetings.
  • Perform other duties as requested by the Director.

Qualifications - Required:
  • Bachelor's degree required.
  • Skilled in effective instructional strategies for teaching English language learners using Sheltered Immersion methodology.
  • At least two (2) years of experience teaching high school or adult ESL and linguistically diverse students.
  • Ability to work with diverse groups, and create a learning environment that fosters mutual respect and cultural sensitivity.
  • Possess a MA DESE ESL License for grades 5-12.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the Massachusetts K-12 History Standards and the WIDA Can-Descriptors.
  • At least three (3) years teaching experience and curriculum development work for high school or adult students.
  • Understanding of the Common Core ELA Curriculum.
  • Excellent writing, communication and organizational skills.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft office applications and/or other uses forms of technology.
Qualifications - Preferred:
  • Bilingual in Spanish, Cape Verdean or Haitian Creole a strong plus.
  • Dual certification in Special Education or History.
  • Prior work or volunteer experience with non-traditional students.
  • Experience with any of the following: project-based learning, portfolio assessment, competency-based education, and cooperative group work, integration of technology and cross disciplinary learning, experiential learning, alternative assessments and integrating school to career experiences into the curriculum.
  • Master's degree in education, TESOL, applied linguistics or related field strongly preferred.
