ORGANIZATION
Hawaii Technology Academy (HTA) is a tuition-free, WASC accredited, public charter school.  Serving more than 1,200 students in school campuses with more than 100 faculty and staff across four islands (Hawaii Island, Kauai, Maui, and Oahu), HTA is Hawaii's largest statewide public charter school. With a truly diverse student population (32% of students are white, 25% are Native Hawaiian, 13% are Hispanic/Latinx and 25% are low-income), HTA is on the leading edge of blended learning at the K-12 level, providing students with a combination of face-to-face instruction, virtual instruction, and independent learning. Partnering with Learning Coaches (usually the student's parent), HTA students are guided by certified educators who support them in their academic, technological and social development. HTA’s highly qualified teachers design and deliver innovative, project-based, Common Core-aligned curriculum in face-to-face classrooms and virtual learning platforms. HTA’s blended learning model allows for a true parent-teacher partnership in the education of children.

At HTA, the Core Values of Collaboration, Critical Thinking, Communication, Creativity and Character are more than simply words displayed on walls. They are foundational skills that will help students to positively impact our local and global community for years to come. For this reason, HTA leaders and staff seek ways to actively cultivate these Core Values in students’ lives to prepare them to face “the challenges of today and the opportunities of tomorrow.” The Core Values are the drivers behind HTA’s curriculum design, instruction, assessment, hiring, and overall program administration. HTA empowers students to succeed through an integrated blended learning experience, leveraging an innovative combination of face-to-face, virtual, and independent learning. OPPORTUNITY
Since 2011, Hawaii Technology Academy has been led by current Executive Director, Leigh Fitzgerald, who is departing at the end of the current (2018-2019) school year. Hawaii Technology Academy is now seeking another innovative leader with a record of success in implementing a personalized learning model, a deep belief in the value of parental involvement, and a commitment to progressive education practices as a core component to students’ K-12 school experience. The Executive Director will be responsible for: supervising finance and operations; managing the school’s senior leaders in the central office and across four Hawaiian islands and school campuses; leading relationships with the board, the Department of Education (Hawai’i DOE), the Charter Commission, political leaders and other community members; and ensuring that the school’s vision and mission are living through its work with students every day.

Hawaii Technology Academy’s next Executive Director will bring: a passion for leveraging mastery-based, student-centered instructional practices; a deep understanding of how to foster students’ social-emotional growth; and a desire to change the “factory model” status quo in education so that students can meet their long-term goals and fulfill their true potential. This individual will be a visionary leader and will believe in HTA’s commitment to what the school calls  “blended learning,” through the use of face-to-face, virtual, and independent learning and social-emotional learning, while keeping parents highly involved in their child’s education. The successful candidate will: balance the ability to set goals aligned to the school’s strategic plan; prioritize action steps, and execute them effectively; have an understanding of high-quality instructional practice; and hold the vision for meeting the needs of all learners. The next Executive Director will be collaborative and flexible and will be a regular presence across HTA’s four campuses. Excellent interpersonal and communications skills and experience working with similar communities to those that HTA serves are also essential to success in this role.

RESPONSIBILITIES
Related to HTA’s school goals, the Executive Director’s key responsibilities include:

Management of all aspects of the school organization, including:

  • Maintaining strong relationships with all school stakeholders (students, faculty/staff, parents, board members, Friends of HTA), ensuring open lines of communication at all times and addressing issues and concerns in a timely, thoughtful and constructive manner;
  • Leading quality implementation of HTA’s innovative instructional program at all four sites and supervising administrators to ensure their site-based service delivery meets students’ needs and is aligned to state and federal standards;
  • Setting goals and metrics of measurement for student outcomes (related to academic performance, social-emotional health, college and career success, etc.) and leading administrators to manage their teams effectively such that these outcomes are met;
  • Ensuring that all leadership team members (and teachers) have clear lines of communication to and from the administrative team and that they all receive regular feedback, support, and evaluation of their progress and areas for development;
  • Providing resources to build student support systems that provide adequate services to meet students’ academic and social-emotional needs (including special education services) and those related to school safety, including developing and staffing these functions appropriately and measuring results to ensure their effectiveness;
  • Supervising front and back office staff, taking primary responsibility for the management of general operations for individual campuses and the network as a whole, including student record-keeping, contracts, and compliance;
  • Overseeing finances for the organization including on-target projections for student and revenue, responsible fiscal planning/budget leadership and accurate reporting to the governing board and outside agencies;
  • Leading all facilities management, including identifying critical site needs, implementing cost-effective solutions, and developing long-term plans;
  • Building strong connections with the relevant departments at the state DOE and Charter Commission that interact with the school around compliance and charter oversight.

In addition, the Executive Director will be responsible for:

  • In concert with other stakeholders, leading the development of the strategy for how to implement HTA’s academic program as reflected in the school’s mission and core values, including all core subjects, electives, and other related activities;
  • Working closely with the Governing Board, senior staff, and site-based administrators to formalize that vision and ensure that each campus has the right amount of resources and support to run its program effectively;
  • Continuing to increase the diversity of faculty/staff at HTA and leading community initiatives to create a greater sense of equity and inclusion among all stakeholders;
  • Maintaining and further building upon the currently strong sense of community among staff, parents and students.

QUALIFICATIONS
In order to fulfill these responsibilities, the ideal Executive Director candidate will be:

  • An experienced manager who knows how to oversee, coach, and develop school leaders and staff at all levels;
  • An adaptable leader who has managed growing, complex, evolving institutions and enjoys the change and ambiguity inherent in that environment;
  • An exceptional relationship builder who can quickly gain the confidence of the Board, parents, faculty, staff, and students;
  • A proven educational leader who understands how to help students best succeed in a personalized, “blended learning” environment and has a deep commitment to HTA’s model and core values;
  • A highly effective operations leader who is able to anticipate challenges, quickly formulate effective solutions, and ensure seamless implementation of technology, finance, facilities, student enrollment, and talent management systems;
  • An “out of the box” thinker who brings knowledge of best practices in education innovation and has experience working in non-traditional education settings;
  • A passionate advocate for all students and families who has a commitment to building a strong culture of diversity, equity, and inclusion at all of HTA’s campuses;
  • Deeply committed to ongoing professional growth for themselves and the people they lead;
  • Knowledgeable about the academic, workforce readiness and social-emotional needs of adolescents as they pursue their paths towards college or career;
  • Skilled at ensuring the financial health and sustainability of HTA programs through developing strong partnerships with internal and external stakeholders;
  • Dynamic and versatile, able to engage a variety of stakeholders in dialogue and speak in a clear, compelling, and authentic manner both about the school’s goals and priorities and the leader’s decision-making process and plans towards meeting them.

Additionally, this person will have a minimum of a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited higher education institution.

Company

We believe equity isn’t a box to check. It’s a daily action. We exist to empower social impact organizations to recognize and overcome unconscious bias, racism and sexism so they can build a workforce that reflects and strengthens the communities they serve.

We look at the data, ask the tough questions and—when we need to—disrupt the status quo. We’ve learned that real change can’t come from relying on the same systems and “best practices” that got us here in the first place. Our clients want to live up to their values, but it’s not always easy to know where to start. They need a trusted guide to get there. We walk them through an equity-driven process focused on finding, hiring and retaining exceptional leaders, developing transparent compensation programs, and building inclusive environments where employees thrive. This is the new standard. And we challenge everyone to meet us here.
