New Visions for Public Schools was founded in 1989 and is dedicated to ensuring that all New York City public school students, regardless of race or economic class, have access to a high-quality education that prepares them for the rigors of college and the workforce. New Visions has been a driving force behind some of the most significant reforms to public education in New York city, including pioneering the model of small high schools in New York City and creating nearly 150 new small schools; producing free open-source curriculum used by thousands of teachers in New York State and across the country; and launching a nationally-recognized Urban Teacher Residency program to train new teachers.

New Visions currently supports nearly 350 schools citywide with school management tools, instructional resources and coaching, and more. This includes 10 charter high schools in Brooklyn, the Bronx, and Queens; and 70 district high schools in all five boroughs that are part of our Affinity network. In 2017-18, graduation rates in our Charter and Affinity networks reached an all-time high of 84.5 percent (an increase of nearly 10 percentage points in the past five years) and college readiness rates reached 55.8 percent, surpassing 50 percent for the first time (an increase of nearly 25 percentage points in the past five years).

SUMMARY: The purpose of this position is threefold (1) to support schools in providing a coordinated data-driven literacy intervention program, (2) to provide students with an English curriculum that ensures students are meeting college ready benchmarks in 9th grade

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
  1. Implement and facilitate the Read 180 reading program within ELA classes and as an intervention.
  2. Assist teachers with the collection of data, analysis of data results and supports the sharing of findings with all staff.
  3. Review student achievement and assist with placing students in appropriate reading and writing intervention and support services.
  4. Teach targeted literacy intervention to small groups of students daily using research-based intervention curriculum and resources.
  5. Assist students using software and materials related to literacy programs.
  6. Meet regularly with the classroom teacher to plan literacy instruction that correlates with the individual student’s needs or as requested by the classroom teacher.
  7. Attend professional development to enhance knowledge of pedagogy and content, especially literacy.
  8. Maintain and submit accurate and up-to-date management records of all students’ progress.
  9. Perform other duties and responsibilities related to literacy as assigned by supervisor.

Required Education, Certifications and Experience:
  • Literacy 5-12, English Language Arts or Students with Disabilities 9-12 Teaching Certification (or in process of reciprocity)
  • Bachelor’s Degree, Master’s preferred
  • Experience with Read 180 and Wilson preferred
