Harlem Children's Zone, Inc. (HCZ) is a multi-site, multi-program community organization that provides a unique and comprehensive interlocking network of education, social and health services, and recreation to more than 27,000 children and adults in Central Harlem. The majority of the children HCZ works with go to public schools and attend its engaging after-school programs. Whether in its Promise Academy charter schools or public schools, HCZ's high standards and expectations are the same for all of its children-ensuring that all of them are on track to attend college and successfully graduate with degrees. HCZ's overarching goal is to create a "tipping point" in the neighborhood so that children are surrounded by an enriching environment of college-oriented peers and supportive adults. Nationally and internationally recognized for its early and progressive intervention programs, HCZ has been lauded by The New York Times as "one of the most ambitious social-policy experiments of our time."

We are seeking an experienced and committed Controller to join the organization's dynamic and fast-paced Finance department which manages a $135 million annual operating budget. This position will be responsible for the accounting function across HCZ and Promise Academy Charter Schools. This high-profile position reports to the Chief Financial Officer and works closely with Senior Staff. The ideal candidate will have the competency, skillset and potential to become the next CFO.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Drive annual budget process (approximately 100 budget centers) including strategic budgetary guidance and budgetary analysis
  • Lead monthly update of financial forecast (in total and by major component) for the current fiscal year and monthly actual financial reports (including modifying format and topics for review as necessary)
  • Develop multi-year financial analysis and projections in conjunction with the CFO and Senior Management
  • Supervise, guide, train, develop and stretch the Finance team including having difficult conversations, when necessary
  • Understand Form 990 and provide an in-depth and thoughtful review
  • Prepare Board of Directors and Finance Committee packages
  • Lead timely, accurate, and comprehensive monthly/year-end closing process, including G/L account reconciliation/substantiation
  • Ensure complete/accurate and timely bank reconciliations occur
  • Work closely on business matters with Program Directors and Principals while proactively identifying issues (preparing for new academic year)
  • Oversee GAAP financial statement preparation and financial analysis
  • Oversee revenue recognition process, including accrual procedures for government grants and contracts and other donations
  • Account for investment portfolio
  • Provide technical accounting guidance for complex transactions
  • Stay abreast of current developments and be a thought leader
  • Initiate audit planning and ensure accurate and timely financial information is provided to external auditors and Federal Grant auditors
  • Ensure compliance with local, state and federal government requirements and tax filings
  • Drive the updating of accounting policies and procedures as necessary
  • Perform other duties and special projects as assigned by the CFO

Qualification, Skills and Knowledge Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree required, MBA desirable, CPA strongly preferred
  • At least 5 years accounting experience in a large not-for-profit or corporate setting and 5 years' experience in a large/mid-sized public accounting firm
  • Experience as Controller/Assistant Controller strongly preferred
  • Strong GAAP accounting knowledge is essential and experience with Form 990 and OMB Uniform Guidance is a plus
  • Understanding financial systems; experience with Abila MIP and Microix a plus
  • Ability to read, analyze and interpret general business and accounting principles and government regulations
  • Excellent communications skills; comfortable making Board and Finance Committee presentations and interacting with Board members
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills with the ability to work well under pressure
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects with strong attention to detail
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and Outlook
