Position summary
The Database Administrator (DBA) II helps lead and inform the direction for all database technology environments at NWEA. This position works within the Product Engineering team to provide support for all development, test and production database environments to ensure availability, reliability, scalability, backup, recovery and performance. In addition, the DBA II is expected to participate in the 24x7 on-call support rotation. As required, the Data Base Administrator II may assist with mentorship to DBA I personnel.

Responsibilities
• Install, configure, and test new database configurations; perform version upgrades of existing databases
• Install, upgrade and maintain all database-related server and administration software
• Perform database profiling and optimization; analyze proposed schema changes as needed
• Proactively monitor activity, utilization, exceptions and database health; propose and deploy appropriate improvements; automate repetitive tasks
• Collaborate with team members to create, publish and maintain database deployment methods and procedures for databases
• Perform database backup and recovery duties; inform standards and schedules for database backups; ensure that backup schedules meet the recovery requirements and conforms to all database and data quality policies and standards
• Work closely with project teams to ensure project success; coordinate product releases, data structure evolution, and manage and synchronize data promotions between development, test and production environments
• Act as a point of escalation and resolution for data - related issues
• Provide advanced technical support for delivery teams and developers working with databases
• Provide 24x7 database support as part of a rotation of on-call DBAs
• Implement and maintain archival and high availability strategies
• Perform other duties as assigned to ensure the success of the team and the entire organization

Skills and abilities
• Working knowledge of MongoDB , PostgreSQL or other comparable RDBMS and NoSQL database technologies
• Experience with MySQL and /or Redis
• E xperience in configuring, implementing and supporting high availability strategies with database systems including clustering and replication
• Experience with d atabase performance tuning, optimizations and troubleshooting, and federation strategies
• Experience in software development using Python, Shell or other scripting languages
• Familiarity with auditing and implementing secure database practices
• Working knowledge of command line Linux, especially CentOS
• Solution focused and methodical, careful attention to detail
• Ability to communicate ideas and designs to all stakeholders, including non-technical audiences
• Ability to work unsupervised and seek out work with minimal direction
• Must be able to perform the physical and intellectual requirements of the role with or without accommodation

Education and experience
• Minimum bachelor's degree in Computer Science or related field; equivalent combinations of education and experience will be considered in lieu of a degree
• Minimum 1 year of experience working with MongoDB and PostgreSQL in a production environment; experience should include administering servers in an enterprise level environment with very large (> 1 terabyte) databases
• Experience supporting a SaaS platform as a Linux professional
• Experience working in an Agile/Scrum environment
• Experience with the following is highly desirable: AWS Management (particularly DynamoDB and RDS), Puppet, Hiera , New Relic, Nagios, Git, Foreman, Jenkins, Atlassian Tool Suite (JIRA, Confluence, Bitbucket)
• Exposure to and understanding of VMware virtualization
• Demonstrated analytical abilities, diagnostic skills and technical aptitude
