QUALIFICATIONS:

Appropriate PA teacher certification.

BA required in Special Education.

Teaching job experience preferred but will vary based on vacancy.

Strong verbal and written communication and motivational skills.

Ability to effectively communicate with, instruct, and work with students, staff and parents.

Familiar with PA Special Education.

Alternatives to the above that the School Board may find appropriate.

SUPERVISES: Not applicable

JOB GOAL: To ensure that each student will think critically, communicate effectively, understand cultural heritage and diversity, respect human dignity and be responsible to self and community and become a contributing member of society.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Maintain a good classroom organization, management and discipline.

Provide an appropriate individualized educational program for each student including the development and implementation of an IEP & CER in conjunction with other staff and parents.

Assess and interpret student ability as related to desired educational goals, objectives, options disability or impairment through the use of both formal and informal assessments.

Meet and instruct classes as time designates and level.

Communicate regularly with parents and be available for educational purposes outside the instructional day when required or requested to do so under reasonable terms.

Knowledge of assessing agencies.

Maintain student records including all required paperwork.

Pursue ongoing professional growth opportunities.

Plan purposeful assignments for teacher assistant(s) when applicable and in conjunction with principal; evaluate their job performance.

Attend staff and department meetings as required.

Work with regular education staff and students to integrate students into building level activities and classes.

Participate in or chair the multidisciplinary team meetings.

MARGINAL FUNCTIONS:

Provide home visits as needed.

Serve on building and district committees as requested.

Supervise corridors, recess, lavatories, lunchroom, and dismissals as assigned.

Assist in emergency situations which may include carrying and lifting special-needs students, pushing wheelchairs or other assignments necessary for the safety of all.

EVALUATION: In accordance with provisions of the Board's policy in Evaluation of Professional Personnel.

Physical Demands:

Sitting for limited periods of time.

100% physically active, standing and walking for extended periods of time.

Kneeling, bending, crouching, stooping, and squatting.

Ability to lift and position students and control certain behavior through physical restraint and assisting non- ambulatory students.

Ability to climb stairs.

Sensory Abilities:

Normal/Corrected vision.

Visual acuity to read correspondence.

Ability to speak clearly and distinctly.

Normal/Corrected hearing.

Temperament:

Ability to work as a member of a team.

Must have a positive attitude, cooperative spirit, and sensitivity in relating to student, staff, parents, and community.

Mental Demands:

Ability to interpret detailed written and verbal communications.

Frequently fast-paced; high-pressure situation.

Environment:

Normal classroom environment.
