Position Summary:

The Director of Science ensures that all Mastery Charter students (K-12) possess the knowledge, critical thinking skills, and scientific curiosity necessary to produce breakthrough results in science as measured by standardized, state and Mastery benchmark assessments. To this end, the Director of Science will lead the development of new Science programming (in elementary and middle school) and the enhancement of existing high school programming in light of the expectations of the Common Core and Next Generation Science Standards. The Director of Science reports directly to the Deputy Chief Academic Officer and provides support to Principals, Assistant Principals of Instruction, and all

Mastery Charter Schools.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Driving system-wide success on State, Standardized Assessments and Mastery Benchmark interim assessments

and other valued science assessments.

Selecting, developing and implementing science curricula, assessments, and resources

Developing and implementing science-centered professional development for Mastery leaders (Assistant

Principals of Instruction, Principals, Teacher Coaches) and instructors

Monitoring implementation of science curricular programming and responding to campus-based and

organization-wide science assessment data

Setting and re-setting the organizational vision of quality science instruction, incorporating lessons learned from

experts in the field, peer organizations, and internally implemented pilots

Collaborating with other members of the Academic Team toward a unified vision of academic rigor

Broad content knowledge in science and science-specific instructional approaches across K-12; deep content

knowledge in specific areas on the K-12 continuum of science learning

Strong communication and interpersonal skills.

Detail-oriented and highly organized with strong analytical writing skills.

Has experienced a high level of measurable success working with urban youth.

Has zest and a sense of humor; team-player

Experience managing others toward outcomes

Thrives in a high-accountability, fast-paced environment

Education and Experience:

Bachelor's degree required; Master's preferred

Five years of experience in teaching, teacher coaching and curriculum/assessment writing.

Familiar with Common Core and Next Generation principles and expectations

Familiar with common national science curricular programs and products.

Strong experience analyzing and interpreting instructional data (in science)

Physical Requirements:

Ability to physically perform the duties and to work in the environmental conditions required such as traveling to network campuses and maneuvering in office space-reaching file cabinets, filing, faxing, coping, typing, mailing, and making phone calls; Must be able to sit for up to four (4) hours looking at a computer monitor, using a keyboard and mouse and typing.

Other Requirements:

Valid driver's license and access to a vehicle for travel when necessary.
