Special Education Teacher (High School)

Educating children in grades preschool to twelfth grade who are diagnosed with a number of physical, mental and emotional disabilities.

Essential Functions
  • Develops and administers school curriculum consistent with school district goals and objectives.
  • Promotes a classroom environment that is safe and conducive to individualized and small group instruction, and student learning.
  • Develops lesson plans and instructional materials and translates lesson plans into learning experiences so as to best utilize the available time for instruction
  • Conducts ongoing assessment of student learning, and modifies instructional methods to fit individual student's needs, including students with special needs; conducts individual and small group instruction as needed.
  • Instructs students in the principles of responsible citizenship and other subject matters specified in applicable laws, as well as administrative regulations and procedures of the school system.
  • Continues to acquire professional knowledge and learn of current developments in the educational field by attending seminars, workshops or professional meetings, or by conducting research.
  • Organizes and maintains a system for accurate and complete record-keeping, grading, and reporting for all student activities, achievement and attendance as required by district procedures and applicable laws.
  • Encourages parental involvement in students' education and ensures effective communication with students and parents.
  • Ensures that student conduct conforms with the school's standards and school district policies, and establishes and maintains standards of pupil behavior needed to achieve a functional learning atmosphere in the classroom.
  • Coordinates with other elementary professional staff members, especially within grade level, to evaluate and assess curriculum, and participates in faculty meetings and committees.
  • Selects and requisitions appropriate books, instructional aids and other supplies and equipment and maintains inventory records.
  • Supervises students in activities that take place out of the classroom during the school day, including activities involving school transportation.
  • Administers standardized tests in accordance with District testing programs.

Performs other related tasks as assigned by the Principal and other district office administrators as designated by the Superintendent.

Equipment

Travel Requirements
Travels to school district buildings and professional meetings as required.

  • Knowledge of current teaching methods and educational pedagogy, as well as differentiates instruction based upon student learning styles.
  • Knowledge of school curriculum and concepts.
  • Knowledge of data information systems, data analysis and the formulation of action plans.
  • Knowledge of applicable federal and state laws regarding education and students.
  • Ability to use computer network system and software applications as needed.
  • Ability to organize and coordinate work.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with students and parents.
  • Ability to engage in self-evaluation with regard to performance and professional growth.

  • Develops and adheres to Individualized Educational Plan, that outlines the necessary supports, accomodations and goals for an individual child.
  • Meets with parents and staff regarding the plan and make necessary adjustments throughout the year.
  • Work with children who can vary from mild to severe disabilities, using specialized techniques to help them reach their goals

Qualifications Profile
  • Certification/License:
  • Delaware State Certification as: (DE 1571) Special Education Teacher of Students with Disabilities and a core content area.

    Subject or area certification also required.

    A category certificate may not be issued alone and an educator shall hold at least one subject or area certification.

    • Successful candidates must provide evidence of successful PRAXIS II scores or a valid out of state teaching license. An educator applying for a license in the State of DE with less than 1 year of experience will be placed on an Initial License and will be required to take and pass a Performance Assessment by the end of their 2nd year of teaching. Applicants with one completed year of experience, but less than 4 years of experience will receive an Initial License, and are NOT required to pass a Performance Assessment (with proof of current and valid out of state license). Current holders of an Initial license are exempt from requirements to pass a Performance Assessment.
  • Motor Vehicle Operator's License or ability to provide own transportation.

Education
  • Bachelors from an accredited college or university in Exceptional Children/Special Education or related discipline applicable to teaching assignment.
    Additional Requirements

    4.1 An educator shall also have satisfied one of the following additional education requirements:

    4.1.1 Holding a bachelor's, master's, or doctoral degree from a regionally accredited college or university with a major or its equivalent, in special education or students with disabilities, from a National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) or the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP) specialty organization recognized educator preparation program or from a state approved educator preparation program where the state approval body employed the appropriate standards; or

    4.1.2 Completion of a minimum of fifteen (15) credits or their equivalent in professional development as approved by the Department, with a focus in special education or in students with disabilities in the following content areas:

    4.1.2.1 Diagnosis and Instruction for Reading / Literacy (3 credits);

    4.1.2.2 Education Evaluation and IEP Development (3 credits);

    4.1.2.3 Curriculum and Instruction in Special Education (3 credits);

    4.1.2.4 Applied Behavior Analysis (3 credits); and

    4.1.2.5 One of the following areas:

    4.1.2.5.1 Legislation, Policy & Procedures/ Special Issues in Special Education (3 credits);

    4.1.2.5.2 Transitions from Secondary Special Education or Secondary Transition Planning (3 credits);

    4.1.2.5.3 Collaborative Teaming in Special Education (3 credits); or

    4.1.2.5.4 Assistive Technology (3 credits).

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
    Teacher Certification - Delaware Code Title 14 Section 1500

    NOTE: A minimum of a high school diploma or GED is required for all employees of the Seaford School District.

    SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT: All new state employees will be required to participate in the State of Delaware's Direct Deposit system. With direct deposit, wage and salary payments are deposited in the employee's bank account via electronic funds transfer.

All final candidates for employment must have a satisfactory criminal background check before being placed on contract/payroll as per State of Delaware regulations. Candidates must call the Delaware State Police at (800) 464-4357 to make an appointment. The cost of the criminal background check is $65 (expense borne by the prospective employee). Final candidates must also receive a satisfactory child protection registry check.

Final candidates must also produce documentation of Mantoux skin test results for entrance to school system.

The State of Delaware has initiated a lag pay policy which means that new employees will receive the first paycheck at the end of the second pay period of work.
