Position: High School to Teacher Program Mentor, Stipend
Reports to: Program Coordinator, BPS High School to Teacher Program
Duration: January 9, 2019 - June 19, 2019 (Two meetings a month, Wednesdays 4p-6p)
Stipend: Stipend Amount $1,200

The Mentor will be responsible for implementing and overseeing the High School to Teacher Program: coordinating recruitment and selection of prospective Scholars acting as a liaison between Scholars and Program Coordinator and providing supports to Scholars once enrolled in the program.

ROLE MODEL & MENTOR
  • Provide positive, key professional leadership by serving as a role model
  • Share enthusiasm for education, the teaching profession and the BPS HSTT mission
  • Assist in identifying tutoring and summer internship sites and in placing Scholars in teaching-related tutoring, shadowing and internships
  • Encourage Scholars to assume respective leadership roles within their cohorts
  • Assist in retrieving required student data and documents (i.e., grade reports on a quarterly basis, permission slips, meeting sign-in sheets, etc.)
  • Provide academic guidance, create an academic plan and connect Scholars with tutors or other program supports when deemed necessary
MEETINGS
  • Communicate event information to Scholars to ensure their regular participation at all BPS HSTT sponsored events
  • Facilitate grade specific sessions, support in curriculum development, create instruction based materials to share with scholars in bi- weekly meeting at the Bolling Building
  • Recommend guest speakers/teachers who can lead monthly meetings/workshops
  • Participate in Mentor Orientation and Program Evaluation
  • Complete event surveys and annual pre and post surveys
  • Participate in and assist with the planning of the Induction Ceremony and End of Year Awards Ceremony
  • Participate in or chaperone social activities scheduled for Scholars and/or Mentors
  • Engage the Scholar's family members to participate and support BPS HSTT Scholars and program based events
COLLEGE ACCESS
  • Chaperone at least one field trip and one college visit
  • Provide college admissions and financial aid guidance
  • Provide Scholars recommendations and assessment for college admission
RECRUITMENT & MARKETING
  • Work with the Program Coordinator to identify, select and retain potential participants for the BPS HSTT Program and also helping Scholars with applications
  • Contribute success stories and/or photos for the creation of the quarterly newsletter, showcasing Scholar event highlights and share with community partners (include Scholars in the development of the Newsletter, when possible)
ADMINISTRATIVE DUTIES
  • Secure data tracking for student progress and other essential program elements. Maintain accurate records of Scholar attendance and completion for all activities.

Qualifications - Required
    • Bachelor's Degree required; Master's Degree, in the field of education,
    • Strong computer skills including, Microsoft Office and Google Drive
Qualifications - Preferred
    • Current teacher or guidance counselor at a BPS high school
    • Strong interpersonal and customer service skills
    • Ability to interact on all levels with partnering organizations
    • Strength in areas of leadership, problem solving, and oral and written communication
    • Excellent tutoring and relationship building skills with high school students
