General Responsibilities: Structure and present curriculum through varied instructional strategies so that each student, consistent with his or her abilities and educational needs is able to develop competence in and beyond the knowledge and skills of the grade; progress on and beyond the basis of achievement standards for the grade; qualify for further education and/or employment; develop ethical standards of behavior and participate in society as a responsible citizen; develop a positive and realistic concept of self and others.

Essential Duties:

Works with general education teachers through collaborative processes to differentiate instruction in the general classroom setting.

Provides periodic feedback and assessment information to classroom teachers through the use of the GT Student Learning Profile and other documents as required.

Develops collegial relationships with general education teachers, provides demonstrations/modeling of lessons, co-teaches lessons, provides professional development experiences and coaches general education teachers to ensure improvement of instructional practice.

Develops activities to encourage parental and community involvement in the education of the gifted.

Interacts effectively with community and parents.

Utilizes class space to form an environment conducive to learning, where gifted students' social and emotional needs may be addressed collectively or individually as needed.

Uses curriculum content (subject-matter and skills) associated with the instructional assignment.

Develops positive interpersonal relationships with students as individuals and as groups.

Provides effective supervision of volunteers and paraprofessionals when applicable.

Fosters relationships with peers, supervisors, and administrators to improve effectiveness.

Practices effective classroom management skills.

Complies with all school laws, State Board of Education regulations, and all policies, regulations, and guidelines made by the School Board and Superintendent.

Perform other duties as may be assigned.

Learns and understands the criteria for the evaluation of the Teacher; especially the areas of evaluation procedures, evaluation, steps and appeals.

Requisite Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Stays current with contemporary issues and research related to gifted education.

Knowledge of the characteristics of gifted students.

Knowledge and understanding of the gifted behaviors of diverse populations of students (i.e., culturally diverse, low income, physically disabled).

Experience in working with diagnostic and prescriptive approaches to assessment of gifted students.

Knowledge of educational models, teaching methods and strategies that ensure gifted students are engaged in rigorous academic learning experiences.

Knowledge of strategies that support the integration of gifted education into the general education setting.

Ability to differentiate instruction to meet the needs of gifted learners

Responsible for continued personal and professional growth in the teaching field.

Serves as a role model, as a life-long learner and a practitioner of applied research and investigation.

Requisite Education and Experience:

Must possess or be eligible for a Virginia Teaching License with an endorsement in gifted education or agree to obtain an endorsement for gifted education within one year of employment.

Experience in instructional technology, as well as willing to pursue appropriate technology training as required by position.

Experience in elementary and middle school core areas preferred.

Physical Requirements:

Must have the use of sensory skills in order to effectively communicate and interact with other employees and the public through the use of the telephone and personal contact as normally defined by the ability to see, read, talk, hear, handle or feel objects and controls. Physical capability to effectively use and operate various items of office related equipment, such as, but not limited to: a personal computer, calculator, copier, and fax machine. Some climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, or repetitive motions required.
