LETTERS OF RECOMMENDATION: Strong applications for this position include letters of recommendation from former and current supervisors, which speak to strengths in the areas of professionalism, collegiality, instructional capacity, and classroom management.

SUMMARY OF ASSIGNMENTS:

Provide direct/indirect instructional services and support to students with behavioral disabilities from throughout the district. Services may range from an all-day special design program to consultation and follow-up services regarding students who have transitioned to less restrictive environments.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
  1. Serve as a cooperative member of school multidisciplinary team and team member of assessment for determination of eligibility, and the development of instructional and behavioral goals that support students with disabilities across a continuum of services and instructional settings.
  2. Develop, implement, and evaluate IEP's and 504 plans using evaluation results and assessment data. Evaluate student progress using progress monitoring strategies.
  3. Provide specially designed instruction to students based on diagnostic data, showing student's abilities and achievement levels, making a plan using district approved curriculum to accelerate their growth and close the achievement gap. Appropriately consider student academic deficiencies, increase communication and socialization skills, and decrease behavior which disrupts the educational environment or is detrimental to self and others.
  4. Understand and apply the concepts of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) as the basis for instructional strategies used in the classroom and school environment.
  5. Conduct Functional Behavioral Analysis (FBA) individually or as a team member to identify the function of the student's behavior and to develop effective positive behavior supports and interventions (BIP). Collect and analyze data to determine the effectiveness of the intervention and modify when appropriate.
  6. Ensure data is collected and records maintained for each student in designated areas to evaluate the effectiveness of the instructional intervention and behavior intervention plan or design.
  7. Maintain professional knowledge and expertise; attend, participate and implement district level program requirements of IDEA and Statewide Assessment requirements.
  8. Adhere to district policies and procedures in implementing curriculum.
  9. Follow district policies, procedures, and administrative directives as they pertain to WAC 392-172A and P.L. 105-17.
  10. Generate and monitor the effectiveness of instructional and behavioral programs for individual students and adjust services accordingly.
  11. Provide consultation and follow-up services to general education teachers, parents, other district personnel, and community agencies as needed and authorized to ensure the successful transition of students into a less restrictive environment.
  12. Provide an orderly and structured environment with a positive climate that motivates students to achieve.
  13. Effectively manage and instruct students in groups and individually.
  14. Effectively manage, instruct, and supervise the activities of instructional assistants, other staff, volunteers, and students working under your direction. Ensure they are trained and monitored on instructional programs and behavior intervention strategies and their interaction with students is monitored weekly.
  15. Provide all instructional staff, support staff, administrators, and specialists a daily/weekly schedule of staff assignments and student activities to ensure supervision for instructional and behavioral supports.
  16. Meet on an ongoing basis as part of a intervention to review student performance relevant to academic, social, emotional, and communication gains of the student and adjust instructional strategies as needed.
  17. Integrates technology into planning, learning, and record-keeping
  18. De-escalation Training: Be trained, meet certification and maintain a high level of competence, in restraint and de-escalation techniques determined by the district to minimize possible injury to students, self, or other staff members.
  19. Serve as a member of the building crisis response team including restraining students who are physically aggressive and/or assaultive in nature or are substantially disrupting the educational process.
  20. Students enrolled in the district's Behavioral Impaired program may be extremely aggressive and assaultive by nature and the risk of physical injury to staff exists. While the district does not condone aggressive or assaultive student behavior, staff accepting this assignment agree and support the position that students will not be transferred to other locations within the district if they assault staff. Students will remain in the program until the IEP team determines the student is ready to begin transition back to his/her home school or other appropriate placement.
  21. Must be physically capable, have the core strength and endurance to work with physically challenging students
  22. Perform other duties as assigned or required by the supervisor.


QUALIFICATIONS:
  1. Qualifies for a valid Washington State teaching certificate with appropriate endorsements as required by law and regulations. Valid Washington teaching certification with special education endorsement or 25 quarter hours of preparation in special education.
  2. Demonstrates classroom management procedures that provide for large and small groups, and individuals, and provides an environment conducive to learning.
  3. Demonstrated understanding of essential requirement with P.L. 101-457 and 504 and its application to the provision of compliance services for the disabled.
  4. Uses appropriate disciplinary procedures, establishes clear parameters for student behavior, responds properly when problems occur, and helps students toward self-discipline.
  5. Demonstrates ability to communicate clearly and effectively in both written and oral form.
  6. Flexible in learning new concepts, cooperates with others, and adapts to a variety of assignments and conditions.
  7. Enthusiastic and displays an overall optimism in motivating toward teaching and student learning.
  8. Assesses needs of students, prescribes and implements effective lessons to meet those needs through the use of appropriate and current instructional skills.
  9. Gains the respect and confidence of students, parents, and staff through modeling appropriate demeanor, behavior, and attire.
  10. Sets and attains high level of expectations with a commitment to using available resources in a way that accomplishment occurs.
  11. Develops favorable relationships with students; listens to, cares for, and works collaboratively with them.
  12. Successful experience and relates positively to youth and adults of varying socioeconomic, cultural, ethnic backgrounds, different learning styles, and various disabilities.
  13. Demonstrates the ability to learn new ideas and skills and for solving problems; the possession of a minimum cumulative GPA of at least 2.5 is expected. (This requirement may be waived if an inadequate pool of fully qualified applicants for a specific position exists.)
  14. Aware of current educational developments and applications, works collaboratively with others, believes in the importance of education, and interested in the welfare of all students.
  15. Uses democratic processes to work out problems in a supportive and understanding nonauthoritarian manner.
  16. Integrates technology into planning, learning, and record-keeping activities.
  17. Successful experience working with students from a variety of ethnic, socio-cultural, and economic backgrounds preferred.
  18. Successful experience working with students with multiple emotional, behavioral, and academic disabilities preferred.
  19. Training and successful experience utilizing behavior intervention techniques, including conflict resolution, anger management, de-escalation and other skills preferred.
  20. Demonstrated ability to work effectively with a diverse group of students, teachers, parents, and administrators in a confidential manner.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:

WORK YEAR: Certificated employees are contracted for a 180-day work year for a full year contract. BENEFITS - Fringe benefits for employees .5 or greater FTE include medical, dental, vision, basic life insurance, and long-term disability coverage are provided for employees who work at least half-time or more in a regular position. In addition, employees have access to a variety of optional benefits through payroll deduction.
