The Chicago Public Schools (CPS) has set ambitious goals to ensure that every child, in every community, has access to a high quality education that prepares them for success in college and career.

CPS is seeking a Senior Assistant General Counsel who will primarily be responsible for providing high quality legal services in various public finance matters. The Senior Assistant General Counsel will also be responsible for drafting, reviewing, analyzing and negotiating other agreements such as supply agreements, consulting services agreements, statements of work and non-disclosure agreements. The Senior Assistant General will work under the direct supervision of the Deputy General Counsel and Assistant Deputy General Counsel.

The Senior Assistant General Counsel will include, but are not limited to the following responsibilities:

  • Reviews, negotiates and drafts a variety of agreements

  • Provides legal advice to a variety of business units, including finance, facilities, procurement and other units on contractual issues

  • Works with internal management and procurement groups and leadership teams to achieve District objectives

  • Advises management on legal risks associated with business transactions

  • Prepares and reviews legal documents prior to execution to ensure accurate expression of legal content



In order to be successful and achieve the above responsibilities, a Senior Assistant General Counsel must possess the following qualifications:

•At least three (3) years of transactional experience in various finance and transactional matters;

•Experience working on public finance transaction, particularly serving as counsel to issuers and underwriters preferred;

•Familiarity with some of the following transactional areas is preferred: municipal finance, banking, corporate finance and securities underwriting, including bond issuance, municipal general obligation and revenue bonds, tax and revenue anticipation notes and municipal lease obligations, and

•Must have strong drafting skills and transactional experience.

Type of Education and License Required: B.A. or B.S. and Juris Doctorate. Must be licensed to practice law and in good standing in the State of Illinois.

Type of Experience and Number of Years: Minimum of 3 years of experience practicing transactional law in various finance matters.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Is a strong communicator; writing, speaking, and listening;

  • Ability to quickly analyze problems/questions, and decide the level of importance, and seek higher level intervention when necessary;

  • Demonstrated ability to take ownership of and solve problems, to expeditiously assess issues and provide sound legal advice;

  • Strong drafting, negotiation and communication skills required; and

  • Must possess not only superior legal and analytical skills but also enthusiasm and passion for the work.
