S UMMARY
Under minimal supervision, engage, support and empower Minneapolis Public School (MPS) parents through the MPS Parent Academy; increase and improve parent/district communication, develop and enhance meaningful and authentic parent engagement in their child's education and build long-term relationships with diverse families resulting in more parent involvement and student success.

Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Develop and enhance meaningful and authentic parent engagement, involvement, and leadership in both school and community.
  • Effectively work with multiple stakeholders (MPS parents, staff and community members) to increase student performance.
  • Assist program coordinator in the planning and implementation of Parent Academy classes, workshops and activities.
  • Collaborate with parent participants to obtain recommendations for continuous Academy improvement.
  • Recruit, select, train, and evaluate Parent Academy parent facilitators.
  • Assist program coordinator in developing sustainable parent communication avenues for broadcasting information regarding Academy programs and activities to parents and families.
  • Co-lead parent facilitator training and meetings and plan for oversight of parent facilitators and subcontractors to ensure high qualify presenters.
  • Build relationships with school family liaisons to support their continued work with families.
  • Support coordination of Parent Academy logistics (i.e. transportation, food, curriculum, childcare, etc.).
  • Assist program coordinator in the development of evaluation, marketing and communication collateral for the CPEO-Parent Academy program.
  • Support the department of Communications, Engagement and External Relations with translation and bi-lingual support as needed.
  • Bridge communication gaps and community understanding between the schools, student and families; assist families to understand and navigate through the school system.
  • Act as an advocate for families to provide an equal learning opportunity and help families access school and community resources.
  • Work closely with Community and Cultural Facilitators to establish and maintain community partnerships to integrate Title 1 families with district activities.
  • Per Title I guidelines, order program supplies, materials, and equipment as needed; create, sort, and assemble program packets and materials.
  • Create and maintain participant, staff and volunteer database.
  • Demonstrate courteous and cooperative behavior when interacting with students, clients, visitors, and MPS staff; acts in a manner that promotes a harmonious and effective workplace environment
  • Enthusiastically promotes the Superintendent's goals and priorities in compliance with all policies and procedures.
  • Maintain absolute confidentiality of work-related issues, records and MPS information.
  • Other duties or tasks may be assigned on an as-needed basis
  • At times may be required to work outside normal business hours and work extended hours to accomplish requirements of the position

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education, Training and Experience Guidelines:
Bachelor's degree and two (2) years of demonstrated experience in community engagement experience specifically in administering public education support programs; OR an equivalent combination of education, training and experience as determined by Human Resources. Bilingual Prefered: Somali, Hmong, or Spanish

Knowledge of:
  • Rules and regulations of the Minnesota Department of Education and other governing agencies.
  • Applicable policies, procedures and regulations covering specific areas of assignment.
  • Principles and practices of public relations, marketing, recruitment strategies and public communications.
  • Knowledge of working in a diverse setting; specifically within the Latino, Hmong, Somali and African American communities.
  • Cultural competency.
  • MPS policies, process and procedures.
  • Customer service principles, protocols and methods that include responding professionally, effectively, and efficiently to customer service requests.
  • Local community resources and regional community services programs.
  • Principles of office management, record keeping and records management.

Skill in:
  • Providing effective customer service, and dealing tactfully and courteously with the public.
  • Gathering and compiling data, and reporting findings.
  • Operating a personal computer utilizing standard and specialized software.
  • Establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships with co-workers and clients.
  • Effective verbal and written communication.
  • Understanding and maintaining highest level of confidentiality.

LICENSE AND CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
A valid Minnesota State Driver's License may be required.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT
Work is performed in a standard office environment which requires occasionally lifting such articles as file boxes or heavier materials with help from others and/or lifting and carrying light objects frequently. A
job in this category may require walking or standing to a significant degree or may involve sitting most of the time with long periods of computer work and heavy phone usage.
